Job Summary
The PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) Administrator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and optimization of the PACS system within a healthcare organization. This role ensures the seamless integration of medical imaging technology with clinical workflows, supporting radiologists, physicians, and healthcare staff in accessing and managing imaging data. The PACS Administrator collaborates with IT, radiology, and other clinical departments to maintain system efficiency, troubleshoot issues, and implement upgrades while ensuring compliance with regulatory and security standards.
Duties/Responsibilities
Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot the PACS, ensuring optimal performance and uptime.
Oversee integration and interoperability between PACS, Radiology Information Systems (RIS), Electronic Health Records (EHR), and other clinical systems.
Implement and manage system updates, patches, and upgrades in coordination with IT and vendor support.
Monitor system performance, data integrity, and image storage, ensuring compliance with security and regulatory requirements (HIPAA, DICOM, HL7).
Provide training and support for radiologists, technologists, physicians, and other users on PACS functions and best practices.
Develop and maintain system documentation, policies, and procedures related to PACS usage, data retention, and disaster recovery.
Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues related to PACS and imaging modalities.
Coordinate with vendors for system maintenance, enhancements, and issue resolution.
Assist in workflow optimization, ensuring efficient image acquisition, archiving, retrieval, and distribution.
Ensure proper data migration and image archiving strategies to manage storage capacity effectively.
Maintain knowledge of emerging imaging technologies and industry trends to recommend system improvements.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Radiologic Technology, Healthcare Informatics, or a related field preferred.
PACS certification (e.g., Certified Imaging Informatics Professional – CIIP) preferred.
Knowledge of DICOM, HL7, and IHE standards is required.
Radiologic Technologist (RT) license or certification (ARRT) is a plus but not required.
Experience
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in PACS administration, radiology IT, or healthcare imaging systems.
Experience working with PACS vendors such as GE Centricity, Fuji Synapse, Philips iSite, Agfa IMPAX, or similar platforms.
Hands-on experience in troubleshooting and supporting medical imaging systems.
Familiarity with networking principles, data storage solutions, and cybersecurity in a healthcare setting.
Required Skills/Abilities
Strong understanding of DICOM, HL7, IHE workflows, and healthcare interoperability.
Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems, database management, and scripting for automation.
Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills for technical issues.
Strong organizational and project management skills with attention to detail.
Ability to train and support radiologists, technologists, and clinical staff on PACS usage.
Knowledge of HIPAA and other healthcare data security regulations.
Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with IT, radiology, and clinical departments.
