Job Summary:
A Medical Coding Specialist is responsible for translating healthcare services, diagnoses, treatments, and procedures into universally recognized medical codes. These codes are used for billing, insurance reimbursement, and maintaining patient medical records. The specialist ensures accuracy and compliance with health regulations and insurance policies. They play a critical role in the healthcare revenue cycle by ensuring that healthcare providers are paid properly and in a timely manner for services rendered.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Apply appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes to patient records for diagnosis, procedures, and services provided. Ensuring that all codes are correctly applied for obtaining optimal reimbursement.
- Analyze patient charts and other documentation to ensure all necessary information is accurately coded and complete.
- Stay updated on changes to healthcare coding regulations (e.g., ICD, CPT, HCPCS, HIPAA), ensuring adherence to federal, state, and payer-specific policies.
- Conduct periodic audits to identify and correct errors or inconsistencies in coding to avoid billing discrepancies or insurance denials.
- Work with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to clarify diagnoses and procedures for accurate coding.
- Follow up on rejected claims and work with insurance companies and patients to resolve coding or billing issues.
- Ensure all patient data is protected according to HIPAA guidelines and confidentiality standards.
- Assist patients with questions about medical bills, explaining charges and resolving coding issues as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned by manager.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, or a related field is preferred.
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification required or preferred. Additional certifications in ICD-10, CPT, or HCPCS coding may be beneficial, or willing to get certified within 6 months from date of hire.
Experience
- Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in medical coding.
- Proficient in medical coding software, electronic health record (EHR) systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
