Position Overview:
The Medical Director has overall responsibility for the medical component of the hospice program, including overseeing physician/NP services, acting as a medical resource for the interdisciplinary team, and implementing effective measures to manage patient symptoms. The Medical Director will also serve as a key hospice advocate, promoting and representing Hospice of Humboldt in the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Staff Oversight: Oversee the training, orientation, and evaluation of physicians and advanced practice clinicians. Review credential files and provide recommendations to the CEO.
- Patient Care Oversight: Provide oversight of the plan of care, medications, and treatments for hospice patients. Serve as the patient’s Attending Physician, taking responsibility for the overall medical care provided and providing direct patient care, as needed.
- Eligibility Determination: Determine initial eligibility for Hospice services as per Medicare Conditions of Participation and provide written certification. Ensure patients are eligible at the end of their second and subsequent recertification periods and provide written recertification.
- Plan of Care Development & Review: Attend the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings to develop, review, and update patients' Plans of Care, ensuring the plan aligns with the medical needs of the patient.
- Documentation: Document clinical findings and the medical plan of care for each patient in compliance with organizational standards.
- Medical Education & Training: Participate in ongoing medical education related to palliative and end-of-life care. Provide continuing education to clinical staff to enhance their knowledge and skills.
- Compliance & Quality: Monitor and improve the quality of care in collaboration with the Director of Quality. Conduct chart reviews, assess the quality of care, and provide feedback to providers. Conduct annual evaluations of staff and services to ensure high standards.
- Regulatory Compliance: Maintain expertise in and ensure compliance with the Medicare Conditions of Participation and other standards that guide hospice care.
- Board Participation: Attend Board of Director meetings and other meetings as requested to provide clinical insights and participate in organizational decision-making.
- Policy & Protocol Adherence: Ensure adherence to hospice policies, protocols, and clinical standards in the care provided.
- On-Call Coverage: Provide 24-hour call coverage as scheduled.
Work Environment: This position involves both office-based and remote work. Must be able to travel to patient homes or care facilities, as necessary, for direct patient care.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Medical degree (MD or DO) with active state licensure.
- Strong clinical background with experience in palliative care, end-of-life care, hospice services or related field.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
- Commitment to high-quality patient care and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Board Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
- Experience in staff supervision, education, and development.
- Knowledge of Medicare Conditions of Participation and related regulatory requirements.
Salary : $200,000 - $250,000
