Job Title : Volunteers (VETERANS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY!)
Schedule : Sunday-Saturday 8 : 30am-4 : 30pm
Location : 800 Stony Brook Court Newburgh, NY 12550
Job Summary :
The volunteer provides patient support services in compliance with Hospice Policies. The volunteer may also perform administrative tasks or other duties as requested and trained.
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Serves as an integral member of the Hospice interdisciplinary group providing volunteer services wherever Hospice services are offered, including respite care, comfort care, and general support to the patient and their caregiver.
- There are various roles in which an individual can volunteer. There are Bereavement Volunteers, Vet-to-Vet Volunteers, and Volunteers designated to work at The Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. These roles and other specific assignments may require additional training.
- Participates in general orientation.
- Completes all annual training as required by law.
- Meets all health requirements on an annual basis.
- The volunteer is supervised by the Volunteer Services Coordinator. When taking an assignment, the individual requesting the volunteer becomes the Volunteer's supervisor for the duration of the assignment. Patient-facing volunteers are supervised by the Social Worker on the team and should direct all patient-related questions to the Social Worker they are working with on each assignment.
- The volunteer is responsible for submitting a Volunteer Charting Form after every assignment worked. Including non-patient facing assignments.
- The volunteer is responsible for calling the supervising social worker after every patient visit in addition to submitting the volunteer charting form for each visit. The volunteer updates the social worker on the patient's condition and shares how the visit went. Social workers share the volunteer's input at interdisciplinary team meetings, as appropriate.
- Patient-facing volunteers work directly with caregivers to determine the schedule for each patient they are currently working with.
- Volunteers must fill out at least one assignment per year to maintain status as an active volunteer.
- Participates in volunteer support groups and / or educational meetings and trainings.
- Maintains open communication and reports regularly to the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
- Report significant information about the patient or caregiver in a timely manner to the appropriate assignment supervisor.
- The social worker assigned to the patient and is available to the volunteer on a consultative basis as needed.
- Restricted Activities : Volunteers are restricted from : 1) administering medication; 2) feeding patients; 3) physically transferring patients; 4) preparing meals. They may give a patient a meal already prepared, and they may be asked to perform light household chores, e.g. washing dishes, etc.

Education and Experience :
The volunteer will be a mature individual, supportive of the hospice concept, comfortable with their own spirituality and be willing to serve others in a volunteer capacity. Previous volunteer experience is preferred. Must have the ability to work within an interdisciplinary team.
