OVERVIEW:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Hospice Bereavement Manager/ Chaplin to join our team. As a Bereavement Manager/ Chaplin, you will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating various aspects of our Bereavement Center. This is an exciting opportunity to make a difference in the lives of individuals in our community and those we have provided service through Hospice of the Valley. This position is 4(10) Monday through Friday with some flexibility.
REPORTS TO: CEO
JOB GOAL: To manage the HOTV bereavement programs and services provided through the bereavement center by organizing and scheduling support groups including offering counseling, assessing needs, responding to community crisis situations when requested, and explaining the services available to the bereaved.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services. A Masters in Counseling/Social Work, Divinity, or Theology is preferred.
2. Have had a minimum of three (3) years of experience working in the Human Services field. Experience working with grief preferred. Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience; and
3. Possess and maintain a current CPR Certification; and
4. Must have and maintain current Alabama driver’s license and liability insurance on vehicle; and
5. Must successfully complete the post job offer physical and submit to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest x-rays at agency expense.
ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Individual understands hospice philosophy, including the understanding of death and dying and the grief process.
2. Individuals must have experience of working with all age groups.
3. Individuals must possess the ability to organize and develop multi-level programs, staff and volunteers aimed at assisting individuals in coping with grief.
4. Individuals must possess strong interpersonal skills in communicating with employees, supervisors, managers, patients and family members, health and community resources involving sensitive and confidential matters.
5. Individuals are self-directed and possess the ability to work with little supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Responsible for the overall development and implementation of HOTV bereavement programs and services provided through the bereavement center.
2. Responsible for the oversight, supervision, and training of the Bereavement Center volunteers.
3. Acts as support group facilitator as needed.
4. Responds to school and other community crises upon request.
5. Works with the Business Development department to promote Community Bereavement Center program and services.
6. Responds to calls from the community and walk-ins inquiring about or requesting services.
7. Supervises and participates in all employment decisions for the Bereavement staff (i.e. performance evaluations, timesheets approvals, interviews, etc.). Selects and trains volunteer bereavement support group facilitators.
8. Manages and supervises the school programs and children’s and teen’s grief support responsibilities in accordance with school guidelines, and patient and family needs.
9. Collaborates with community partners (i.e. funeral homes, schools, etc.).
10. Structures, coordinates, and supervises all support groups.
11. Assesses needs for loss-specific support groups (i.e. men’s groups, older teen groups, loss of a child, loss due to traumatic death, etc.), and develops and implements community education programs related to grief and bereavement.
12. Re-evaluates and adapts bereavement program as necessary to meet agency and community needs.
13. Develops and maintains Bereavement Center’s library.
14. Prepares Community Bereavement Center monthly program reports.
15. Investigates grants and other funding sources to support the Community Bereavement Center.
16. Prepares and manages the Bereavement budget.
17. Maintains confidentiality of employee and patient or client information.
18. Understands that teamwork is a crucial part of our business, and is able to work well with colleagues, no matter the circumstances. Using individual skills, cooperates with others, and accepts and provides constructive feedback despite any personal conflicts between individuals involved.
19. Utilizes current Agency and/or department specific software to complete assignments.
FUNCTIONS RELATED TO HOTV PATIENTS AND FAMILIES
1. Coordinates all bereavement services provided to HOTV patients and families, including but not limited to anticipatory grief needs prior to patient’s death (Chaplain) and bereavement needs of the family following death (Bereavement Chaplain).
2. Works to ensure that accurate and timely information is sent to the patient’s caregivers following the death of a patient.
3. Provides all bereavement services after death.
4. Is responsible for the oversight of services being provided to individuals/families receiving memorial cards, phone calls, individual bereavement visits and support groups.
5. Responsible for Memorial Services.
