Summary
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and engagement of children in the assigned group as well as all children in the After School Program.
- Attend every shift as scheduled or arrange for a substitute at least 24 hours in advance, notifying the supervisor of the change in staff.
- Facilitate a program environment that invites exploration, promotes positive play, and welcomes children.
- Serve as a positive role model, demonstrate professional behavior, and understand positive youth developmental approaches to the academic and social development of youth.
- Promote a team concept through a positive approach to supervision, communication, and interactions with others. Maintains appropriate, ongoing communication with the supervisor.
- Provide activity plans to facilitate purposeful and engaging experiences. Plan group projects that compliment the program’s thematic or project-based agenda.
- Implement activities in a developmentally appropriate manner, meeting the individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the participants.
- Provide careful, attentive supervision, and remain alert at all times.
- Maintain accurate program records as assigned and according to program requirements, such as accident reports and student behavior logs.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
- Complete 15 hours per year of DHS approved training through the Professional Development Registry.
- Complete CPR, First Aid, and Fire Extinguisher Training in a timely manner.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age or older.
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Child development/Education background highly preferred.
- Prior experience working with children 13 years of age or under is highly preferred.
- Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
- Experience in implementing interactive and educational/artistic activities, youth development, academic enrichment, and arts is preferred.
- Must possess oral, auditory, and written communication skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
- Must successfully work as part of a team. Must follow directions from supervisors and support the other counselors in implementing scheduling, behavior management, and implementation of activities
- Flexibility, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: From $12.00 per hour
Expected hours: 39 per week
Schedule:
- 10 hour shift
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
