GENERAL:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Mentors and coaches’ subordinates; hiring, training and development of staff as well as performance appraisal, documentation of deficiencies, performance recognition and disciplinary action; develops, supervises and appraises direct subordinates; plans and implements disciplinary actions as needed, working with Human Resources and legal advisors as appropriate.
  2. Participates, as a key member of the Nursing Leadership team for the assigned clinical function, in the development of strategies, initiatives and programs addressing matters such as: provision of new services, standardization of procedures across the organization, increasing market share.
  3. Responsible for maximizing resources, cross-selling services, improving cost-effectiveness of clinical services provided, enhancing patient outcomes/satisfaction and achieving critical success factors of the Organization.
  4. Conducts and/or participates in a variety of staff and committee meetings including regularly held surgical committee; Represents assigned areas to other departments and external agencies to coordinate activities, identify issues, resolve problems and share information.
  5. Displays financial acumen and resource management:  directs and participates in the preparation and administration of Surgical Services budgets and capital equipment requests; evaluates staffing, equipment and supply needs; Actively monitors department productivity
  6. Organize; direct, plan and manage the services offered through the PACU, Ambulatory, Endoscopy departments and remain in compliance with standards of care determined by

regulatory agencies. 

  1.  Provides support to the surgeon, registered nurses, certified surgical techs and CRNA in the operating room.   
  2. Responsibility includes assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of perceived/actual or potential physical or psychosocial problems that may result from the intrusion of anesthesia agents, techniques and surgical procedures. 
  3. Ensure clinical care is delivered in a safe, effective manner in compliance with relevant statutes, rules and regulations as well as professional practice. Monitors and evaluates new or revised regulatory agency and industry laws, regulations and standards applicable to assigned areas and ensures that assigned activities comply with all requirements.
  4. Create and maintain a sterile field.  Monitor and control the environment.
  5. Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Directly manages and supervises all surgical and ambulatory services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

 

The Surgical Services Director shall be:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing preferred and five years of emergency, surgical, or critical care nursing experience, including two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity. 
  2. Five years’ experience working in a Med/Surg, CC acute/tertiary care, home health or community care facility preferred
  3. Familiar with Wyoming State Nurse Practice Act and has recent experience with trauma service regulatory requirements to include Wyoming State Law, OSHA, CAH Conditions of Participation and trauma designation. 

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write policies and procedures that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and is knowledgeable in metric, apothecary and household measurements and can convert from one system to another.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to modify care based on the developmental / functional age of the patient as well as that of the patient's ethnic background.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

 

  • BLS required
  • Course certification in ACLS required or obtain within one year of employment.
  • TNCC, CNOR preferred or obtain within one year of employment
  • Current Wyoming Registered Nurse license or ability to obtain upon hire

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Ability to act as a patient advocate.  Ability to interact with patients, families, visitors and co-workers.  Ability to interact assertively and tactfully when dealing with conflict and in group solving activities.  Ability to demonstrate a professional, open minded approach in identifying problems and resolving problems/conflicts.

 

Age Specific:

Must be able to provide care according to the developmental level and or chronological patient served.  This includes, but is not limited to, identifying the needs and abilities of each patient, and demonstrating an understanding of how a patient’s chronological and developmental age influences his/her need for adaptations related to his/her abilities.  Also, an understanding of how a patient’s age impacts his/her ability to deal with and adapt to the care needed/provided is required.  General census of neonatal to geriatric patients.

While filling this position, the employee must regularly lift and or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance, vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.  This position also requires walking or standing to a significant degree.  This position also requires reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, and hearing, stooping, bending, crouching, and working with equipment.
