POSITION SUMMARY:
Summer Portals at Hotchkiss School includes a wide variety of academic and recreational offerings to rising 6th through 9th grade students, many of whom are experiencing a residential learning experience for the first time. Students come to Summer Portals from diverse nationalities and cultures, seeking academic enrichment and exploration.
Summer Portals is seeking per diem chaperones for various off-campus activities as listed below. You can apply to chaperone select dates as you wish.
Session I: June 30-July 12
July 3, 2025: NY Mets game at Citi Field (4 p.m. - Midnight)
July 5, 2025: Splash Down Beach Water Park, Fishkill, NY (3 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
July 12, 2025: Lake Compounce Trip (11 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
Session II
July 18, 2025: Hartford Goats Game (2 p.m. - 10 p.m.)
TBD: Portals Piano at Carnegie Hall, Date TBD (1 p.m. - Midnight)
July 20, 2025: NY Mets game at Citi Field (4 p.m. - Midnight. Time subject to change)
July 22, 2025: Lake Compounce Trip (11 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Chaperones are responsible for attending events with students and our fellows. They are responsible for verifying that fellows take attendance prior to departure, communicate their attendance to the Dean and Director, verify that fellows do periodic check-ins with their assigned students during the time off campus, verify that fellows do a proper check-in on the bus at the time of departure, assuring that all students are accounted for, and confirming that fellows confirm their headcount with the Dean and Director at the time of departure. Upon return to Hotchkiss, chaperones check every seat on the bus to ensure that students have exited and oversee that fellows escort students to their assigned dorms upon return on late-night events. Finally, chaperones should email fellows when all students are accounted for in the dorm and communicate back to the Dean and Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Arrive at the bus/vehicle 15 minutes before departure and coordinate with the assigned fellows.
- Confirm that the attendance record reflects every student on the bus(es) and that attendance (present and absences) is communicated to the Dean/Director upon departure.
- Upon arrival at the venue, ensure that every student is grouped with their fellow and oversee the walk from the parking lot to the venue (e.g. stadiums).
- Distribute tickets when applicable.
- Before walking to the venue, communicate the periodic check-in times and expectations.
- Remain in a central area that students and fellows know and make that the periodic and concluding check-in location.
- Upon departure, account for every student before leaving the venue.
- Upon boarding the bus, make sure fellows account for every student and that fellows communicate that everyone is accounted for and communicated back to Dean and Director before departure from the venue.
- Upon return to Hotchkiss, chaperones check every seat on the bus to ensure that students have exited and oversee that fellows escort students to their assigned dorms upon return on late-night events. Finally, chaperones should email fellows when all students are accounted for in the dorm and communicate back to the Dean and Director.
- Chaperones are expected to address emergent safety needs that warrant immediate support, ensuring student safety and well-being.
- Chaperones must complete online professional boundaries training in Sexual Harassment Prevention, CT Department of Children and Families Mandated Reporter Training, Child Trafficking in CT, and Prevention of Adult Sexual Misconduct.

- Possess strong communication skills that effectively promote inclusive and respectful behavior amongst students and respectful exchange amongst colleagues.
- Friendly attitude and approachable demeanor that exhibits compassion, empathy, and patience for students.
PHYSICAL WORK CONDITIONS
- Must be able to maintain a stationary position and/or traverse while performing essential responsibilities.
- Must be able to communicate and converse as well as distinguish and observe.
