POSITION: Community Justice Advocate

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Programs

STATUS: Full-Time

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 9a-5pm (Flexible based on work assignment)

Salary: $85,000-$90,000 per year

The individual in this role will advocate, promote, enhance, and protect the organization’s brand and reputation. The ideal candidate will bring a deep passion for advocacy, activism, and community engagement, working with key partners to drive social change. Have a demonstrated passion for advocacy, activism, and movement building; high level of comfort speaking out to make positive change. Individual must be interested in approaching work in an anti-racist, inclusive environment which is committed to Hour Children’s (HC) values of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Role Responsibilities:

Serve as an advocate on behalf of the agency, engaging in community advocacy campaigns, communications, and reporting to the Chief Impact and Program Officer.

Work closely with the supervisor, social media staff, and Executive Director (ED) to develop and implement the organization’s involvement in community campaigns and outreach efforts.

Publicly represent HC with various constituency groups including governments, partner organizations, working groups, and committees.

Assist with the implementation of HC initiatives, and when designated by the ED, serve as spokesperson for HC at events, learning collaboratives, working groups, etc.

Help to position HC as a key partner and mobilizer on emerging topics across health, gender, and justice issues.

Provide advice to organizational leadership on HC advocacy agenda

Amplify HC’s core values of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion in all communications.

Collaborate with organizational leadership to develop HC’s messaging and positions on emerging topics.

Contribute new ideas and strategies and make connections among previously unrelated concepts.

Assist with cultivating new and existing relationships with HC community partners.

Inform and educate staff and participants about advocacy efforts, while encouraging active participation from the Hour Children community in these initiatives

Travel within NYC and State as needed

Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:

Passionate and dedicated individual who is directly or indirectly justice-impacted

Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as an advocate specifically within criminal justice

Prior experience working within the criminal justice community or nonprofit arena highly desirable

Significant and demonstrable experience of leading effective advocacy campaigns, with track record of making change happen

Proven skills in persuading, negotiating and representing at a significant city and state level

Excellent communications skills (both written and verbal)

Good understanding and analysis of political, economic and social environments in which HC operates

Language – Fluency in English is required, fluency in Spanish or other languages relevant to HC work is preferred.

Political Savvy: Can maneuver through complex political situations effectively and generate positive outcomes

Collaboration: Brings a track record of working effectively with various and diverse individuals and groups, and a willingness to actively listen and invite different views and opinions across all levels of the organization to build alignment in support of a common goal.

Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and Social Media web platforms or have a willingness to learn

Salary : $85,000 - $90,000
