Maintenance of Way Technician – Canaan, CT
The MOW Technician will assist in general track and maintenance of way activities including installation, maintenance, inspection and replacement of ties, rail, switches, ballast and culverts and other drainage structures.
Other duties as required and consistent with training and experience.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
· Monitor processes, materials, or surroundings – monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment to detect or assess problems.
· Cut rails to specified lengths using rail saws.
· Repair or adjust track switches, using wrenches and replacement parts.
· Grind ends of new or worn rails to attain smooth joints, using portable grinders.
· Clean tracks or clear ice or snow from tracks or switch boxes.
· Clean, grade or level ballast on railroad tracks
· Clean or make minor repairs to machines or equipment.
· Drill holes through rails, tie plates, or fishplates for insertion of bolts or spikes, using power drills.
· Raise rails, using manual/hydraulic jacks to allow for tie removal and replacement.
Required Skills/Abilities
· High school diploma or equivalent, such as GED.
· Experience not required but helpful.
· CDL and experience operating equipment is a plus.
· Equivalent of a two-year degree in related technical field is a plus but not a requirement.
Job Requirements
· Available to work in the geographic area of Western Connecticut and Massachusetts
· Must be able to drive and possess a valid State driver’s license in good standing.
· Must possess the knowledge to use a computer, general office equipment, fleet vehicles and other related shop equipment and able to keep detailed work records.
· Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends as needed.
· Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of conditions (e.g. weather, rain, dust, noise, heat, cold, etc.)
· Must be able to report to work safely with two-hour notice.
· Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
· Must pass a background screening.
· Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.
Physical Requirements
· Prolonged periods of standing and traversing railroad cars and tracks.
· Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting heavy objects, bending, balancing, walking, stooping, stretching and handling of materials.
· Must handle parts and equipment ranging from 10 to 100 lbs. Must be able to lift, push, pull, climb, sit and stand.
· Must be able to identify and distinguish colors and hear warning signals.
· Must be able to walk up to a mile on rough terrain.
· Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at a time.

We are a short-line railroad that has a north-south line from Pittsfield, MA to Danbury, CT and an east-west line from Danbury, CT to Derby, CT covering over 160 miles. We provide local service to customers throughout western Connecticut and Massachusetts. We interchange with CSX in Pittsfield, MA. Our trains operate 6 days per week and our crews enjoy the comfort of going home every night.
