SUMMARY: Providing safe and quality food is the job of all House of Flavors employees. A Quality Assurance Technician, an at-will employee working under the direction of the Quality Assurance Manager and Supervisor, is responsible for ensuring that ice cream is manufactured in a safe manner according to company and customer specifications. QA Technicians perform tests on mix and ice cream to ensure food safety and quality and maintain production records. QA Technicians follow and enforce all House of Flavors policies and practice and enforce Good Manufacturing Practices and all general safety practices.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.) Tests all mixes prior to use for fats and solids, temperature, and taste and takes the required steps for any mix that is out of specification.

2.) Prints recipes for mixes and knows how to standardize mixes.

3.) Collects, plates, reads, and logs micros; calibrates lab equipment as needed.

4.) At the beginning of each days run, visually inspects each line and swabs with the charm unit.

5.) Monitors rerun; recognizes allergen and related issues; knows the House of Flavors rerun procedure and policy; organizes the use of the rerun; tests rerun for quality.

6.) Monitors and enforces all House of Flavors policies; promotes food safety; and guides employees as necessary; completes Food Safety Violation sheets for employees who are not following House of Flavors policies and Good Manufacturing Practices.

7.) Assigns all hold numbers, issues hold tags, and ensures that the necessary documents are given to the proper personnel for each hold.

8.) Performs drain weights, overruns, and monitors the temperature on product; monitors the temperature of mix tanks, drop counts, sanitizer checks, and metal detector checks throughout the day.

9.) Pulls samples of product and performs cuttings of product as requested.

10.) Is present for flavor changes checking that the correct flavors, colorings, condiments, and variegates are used as specified on each recipe and that the lot codes for the ingredients are recorded; make sure that the correct packaging and code/label is used; fills out the quality assurance reports assuring that all required information is collected.

11.) Collects packaging and packaging information due to defective packaging.

12.) Works as a member of the Quality Assurance team, learning the jobs of different workstations included in this job description, enabling the ability to rotate from job to job giving breaks or filling in when other employees are absent.

13.) Assists the Quality Assurance Manager and Supervisor with other duties as requested including participation in required training.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility to the appropriate company standard. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent is required along with a minimum of 6 months of work experience in a related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience. The ability to work co-operatively in a team environment is essential.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and write in order to follow instructions and create short documents; effectively present information in individual and group situations; understand, observe and clearly direct others in observance of company policies, Standard Operating Procedures and food safety Good Manufacturing Practices.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals and ability to perform mathematical calculations and understand numerical specifications including temperature measurements, time calculations and decimal weights and the ability to chart information and record data into tables.

REASONING ABILITY: Has the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or verbal instructions and has a basic understanding of mechanical processes to facilitate an understanding of manufacturing processes. Can carry out basic laboratory tests and record, understand and report the results.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is required to stand, including walking, for periods of time up to 12 hours. The constant use of hands and arms during this time including lifting, pulling, reaching, and fine manipulation is required. The use of hand tools requiring a substantial grip is occasionally required. The employee may be required to stoop or crouch. The employee may work in an environment where the temperature is near 32 degrees above zero. The employee is required to talk and hear.

The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds continuously and up to 60 pounds as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the essential functions of this job the employee regularly works with moving mechanical components and is regularly exposed to high levels of noise. Safety equipment may be required. The employee works in a wet environment where floors are slippery and splashing water, ice cream ingredients and sanitation solution is frequently present.

COMMENTS AND/OR ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Employee is required to wear an approved uniform which is provided by the company. Employee is required to wear safety toed boots that can withstand water, food products, and chemical contact. Employee is required to wear a hairnet and, if facial hair is present, a beard net. The ability to use gloves for food safety while working is required.
