Housekeeper/Family Assistant
Informal and Warm, Family of five in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, NY
Work days are 4 days per week (Mon.-Thurs.) and hours are approximately 9 am-5pm (flexible for the right candidate),
Pay range is $35-$40. hour depending on experience.
Looking for an experienced, energetic, and highly organized Housekeeper/Family Assistant to partner with them to keep their home clean and organized and help their family life run more smoothly. The family enjoys eating dinner together most nights.
The role requires cleaning, home organizing, errands/grocery shopping, ingredient prep and light cooking, and occasional childcare. While it is not a nanny job, they would love to find someone who enjoys being around children and teenagers and who will be happy to pitch in on childcare (6 year old has a separate part-time babysitter).
One parent works from home 2-3 days per week and the other one rarely works from home.
3 girls are ages 14, 11 and 6 and walk to school in the neighborhood.
A proactive person who is not afraid to ask questions and suggest solutions will be a great fit.
Cleaning
The 4 bedroom / 2 bathroom home is spread over 3 floors, with a small kitchen on the first floor.
• Kitchen –deep clean 1x week; tidy daily; keep kitchen well-organized
• 2 bathrooms –deep clean 1x week; tidy daily
• Organize and tidy home spaces –learn where items belong and who they belong to
• Dust and wipe down surfaces –1x weekly for each area, including window frames and shutters 1x month
• Vacuum each area 1-2 times/week. Sweep and mop as needed in kitchen, first floor, hallways and bathrooms.
• Change sheets 1x week –4 beds
• Laundry –wash towels; kitchen cloths; sheets (machine in basement)
• Clothing laundry--potentially do some clothing laundry if building washing machine is upgraded, otherwise organize clothing laundry drop o\ and pick up from laundromat. Know fabrics and which items can be laundered, what requires hand-wash or air dry (e.g. wool). Put away in dressers.
• Flag broken items or needed repairs.
• Maintain cleaning supplies; buy more as needed.
Home organizing and upkeep
• Help maintain organization in kitchen and note when pantry staples or cleaning supplies are running out.
• Organize clothing laundry drop o\ and pick ups
• Organize belongings and put things back where they belong (kids items downstairs, kids rooms). Develop new organizing systems where needed. Ask questions as needed.
• Organize playroom, throw items out as needed, sort completed art into separate pile and ask questions to help maintain craft/art supplies in order (do not just throw everything into one container so it looks tidy)
• Keep closets organized, ask questions when you have them.
• Label kids’ clothing with name labels
• For kids, review each kid’s room once per season to find worn-out or outgrown items, organize into bins/bags. Organize items to review for give-away and put into bags for separate destinations.
Food prep and cooking
• Ingredient prep–chop veggies, clean salad, cut fruit, prepare hard boiled eggs,
• Must be able to make simple meals (steam broccoli, make pasta, etc.) 2-3 days per week (soup, rice and beans, roasted salmon, etc.)
Errands/Personal assistance
• Grocery shopping and putting away when requested.
• Prepare online grocery or Costco orders and receive deliveries when requested.
• Monitor kitchen and cleaning
• Drop o\ dry cleaning or laundry
• Pick up items at local shops or make returns.
• Drop o\ packages, be able to print labels or display QR codes.
• Drop o\ outgrown clothing or other donation items or organize pick-ups.
• Return items at stores if needed (not frequent)
• Nice to have: online shopping for specific requested items (e.g. kids socks, leggings, able to remember brand preferences and sizes)
Childcare
• Must love children and be happy to be around them.
• Not a nanny job(kids will be at school during most working hours), but must be open to caring for girls and partnering with family to make their lives run more smoothly
• Occasional pick ups from local school (around corner–2 min walk) for 1st grader when her usual babysitter is not available or they have schedule changes
• Provide childcare on your regular work days when school is closed or a child is mildly sick and stays home from school and parents cannot be home.
Nice to have:
• Valid Drivers' license and clean driving record, occasional other errands by car or to pick up car from repairs, get car inspection renewed, etc.
• Open to staying late on weekday evenings upon request to care for kids, if parents will be out.
