Location: Livermore, CA
Job Type: Full-Time, non-exempt
Schedule: Monday – Friday 8am to 5:30pm. Additional evening and weekend availability may be required for emergency work orders.
Overview
The Housing Specialist I supports the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program by determining eligibility for low-income families, processing applications, and maintaining compliance with HUD regulations and agency policies. This role helps ensure the agency meets performance standards like HUD's Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP).
The Housing Specialist I supports the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program by determining eligibility for low-income families, processing applications, and maintaining compliance with HUD regulations and agency policies. This role helps ensure the agency meets performance standards like HUD's Section 8 Management Assessment Program (SEMAP).
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a reduced caseload, including client interviews, eligibility determination, interim and annual reexaminations along with ongoing customer service.
- Process applications, verify income, calculate rent shares, and enforce program compliance.
- Address inquiries from applicants, tenants, landlords, and the public, providing clear information and guidance in accordance with agency rules and regulations.
- Investigate potential program fraud or abuse and prepare related documentation.
- Maintain accurate records, ensuring file integrity and compliance with privacy laws.
- Assist with special housing programs and HUD performance reporting.
Qualifications
- Associate degree in social services, business, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 1 year of experience in housing-related case management or client services.
- Must obtain certifications in Occupancy Standards, Rent Calculation, EIV System, and Fair Housing within one year of hire.
Skills and Attributes
- Familiarity with HUD regulations and agency policies is a plus.
- Strong communication, organizational, and math skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations and manage sensitive situations tactfully.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general office equipment.
