What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Education Specialist position at Housing Matters?
Housing Matters partners with individuals and families to create pathways out of their homelessness into permanent housing. We are a leader in working to end homelessness – and we want you to be part of our team! We are looking for individuals eager to make a difference and willing to enthusiastically commit to join in our vision that homelessness in Santa Cruz County should be rare, brief and non-recurring.
The Community Education Specialist is tasked with further development and execution of our program to educate and engage local community members in conversation and action around solutions to homelessness. This role will develop existing relationships, and identify and cultivate new ones, through public and private events, webinars, and social media.
Hours and Benefits
- Community Education Specialist is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position, eligible for medical, dental, vision, 403b, and our generous PTO plan.
- Regular hours are Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings and weekends are required.

Starting Wage for Community Education Specialist (Depending on Experience):
Preferred Experience and Education Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, education or related field or equivalent work experience required.- 1-3 years of experience in community engagement or similar field required
Special Requirements
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License or must be able to provide suitable transportation which is approved by the organization
Thorough knowledge of:
Community organizing and education
- Building comprehensive and engaging presentations and workshops with the intention to educate and persuade (both in-person and virtually)
- Public speaking, plus written and verbal communication
- Microsoft Office applications, Google Suite
- Excellent command of social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) and proven experience building brand awareness and engagement using these channels
Essential Functions:
Work collaboratively with internal and external partners to further develop and implement a program of community education activities that foster awareness, understanding, and action regarding solutions to homelessness in Santa Cruz County
- Cultivate and engage with key community partners to support the long-term community engagement strategy
- Generate donor, volunteer, and advocate leads through community education activities, including but not limited to: speaking to community groups, hosting campus tours, visiting classrooms and collaborating with educators, tabling at outreach events, social media, partnering with like-minded agencies
- Contribute to the development of educational content for various audiences
- Assist with team efforts to organize events as directed by the Chief Impact Officer
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of all aspects of the program, including plans, budgets, and outcomes
- In collaboration with the Director of Community Education, adjust program design and execution as needed
- Prepare reports on program design and outcomes
