The Houston Astros baseball organization is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Tech Lead to join our Research and Development (R&D) department within Baseball Operations. This role will be pivotal in driving the development and implementation of cutting-edge software solutions that support objectives and functions across baseball departments including player evaluation, scouting, player development, and major league strategy. The Tech Lead will work closely with leadership within R&D to facilitate the execution of high leverage projects to drive strategic advantages for baseball operations and to identify areas for internal investment in our tech stack. The Tech Lead will also directly contribute to our software development and help drive the practices and processes of the software team.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities

- Lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable software solutions.
- Work closely with the Technical Product Manager, stakeholders, and software development team to define technical requirements and deliverables.
- Establish and foster a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence within a team of software developers.
- Ensure adherence to best practices in software development, including code reviews, testing, continuous integration, and documentation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, integrating relevant advancements into the development process.
- Participate in a rotating on-call schedule to address any urgent issues with our software systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience taking a leadership role (either formally or informally) and driving progress within a software development environment.
- Extensive experience and strong understanding of either Full-Stack Web-Development (Javascript/Typescript, SQL, C#, Python), Data Engineering (Spark/PySpark, Python, SQL), or both.
- In-depth knowledge of software development methodologies, including Agile and DevOps practices.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams including non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.
- Experience working with sports data is a plus
Work Environment
This job operates in an office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones and photocopiers. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit (for long periods of time); use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear. The employee may occasionally lift or move equipment, up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision.
