Summary/Objective:
The Houston Astros are seeking an Apprentice for the Research and Development department within Baseball Operations. We are seeking an applicant with a strong technical background to conduct research that encourages the effective understanding and application of our numerous sources of data. The models, visualization, and tools built will support and allow for collaboration with all facets of Baseball Operations: scouting; player development; player acquisition; video; and more.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Research, develop and test descriptive and or predictive models to support Baseball Operations in player evaluation, player development, roster construction and game tactics
- Conduct ad hoc research to improve the organization’s understanding of the game of baseball
- Prepare and explore a variety of baseball data sets
- Provide meaningful insights across Baseball Operations through the lens of data and analysis
Education and/or Experience:
- Working towards or completed a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in statistics, engineering, applied math, physics, quantitative social sciences, computer science, operations research or similar field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Inquisitive and willing to question the status-quo
- Ability to communicate technical ideas to non-technical audiences using data visualization
- Demonstrated work ethic, passion for baseball, and strong baseball knowledge
- Experience with R/Python or similar statistical programming languages
- Experience with one of analyzing baseball data and strong understanding of sabermetric concepts, learning techniques or video processing, tracking data, or biometric data sets.
Work Environment
This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level is usually moderate but can be loud within the stadium environment.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a largely sedentary role. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and focused vision.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including; extended hours, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Travel
Travel is not expected for this position.
