Position Summary:

The Part-Time Dorm Chaperone is a member of a rotating team of 3–4 individuals responsible for supporting the residential life experience for Houston Ballet Academy students living in the Center for Dance dormitory. Working on assigned days, chaperones provide evening supervision, helping to maintain a safe, welcoming, and developmentally supportive environment. Under the leadership of the Residential Life Coordinator, chaperones play a key role in fostering student well-being, managing dorm operations during assigned shifts, and promoting a strong sense of community.

 

Please review the following duties and responsibilities, which include but are not limited to:

 

Student Supervision & Support

  • Provide on-site supervision for students during assigned overnight shifts, ensuring safety, accountability, and adherence to dorm policies.
  • Assigned shifts run from 6:30 PM to 8:00 AM; chaperones are expected to remain on-site and available to students throughout this time.
  • Build positive relationships with students, serving as a trusted adult presence and mentor during shift hours.
  • Assist students in cooking and cleaning, while teaching basic life skills.
  • Support student transitions, including check-in/check-out procedures and greeting families at arrival or departure.
  • Provide transportation for students, including airport transfers, appointments, or emergency needs when required.
  • Promote a respectful and inclusive dorm culture by modeling positive behavior and encouraging peer accountability.

 

Operational Support

  • Support the Residential Life Coordinator with evening dorm responsibilities and communication.
  • Monitor student chore completion and report any concerns to the Residential Life Coordinator.
  • Provide additional coverage during Coordinator time off, including weekends or holidays, as needed.
  • Maintain awareness of emergency protocols and be prepared to assist in health or safety situations, including communicating with parents and Academy staff.
  • Coordinate any scheduling conflicts or shift coverage needs directly with the Residential Life Coordinator.

 

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Experience working with adolescents in a residential, educational, or youth services setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to set clear expectations with care and consistency.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to drive or learn to drive an 8-passenger van.
  • Availability to sleep in the dormitory two nights per week.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-based approach.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or coursework in education, counseling, humanities, or performing arts.
  • Prior experience in residence life or dormitory settings.

 

Additional Requirements

  • CPR and First Aid certification (can be provided by Houston Ballet).
  • Mental Health First Aid certification (can be provided by Houston Ballet).
  • Must meet Houston Ballet’s Vehicle Driver Policy requirements, including minimum personal auto insurance coverage.
