Title: Assistant Principal, Middle School

Reports To: Principal

Compensation: $68,000 - $74,000 per year

Status: Exempt

 

Our School 

Houston Classical Charter School (“Houston Classical”) was chartered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to open in Houston in August 2020 beginning with kindergarten and first grade. The school has an accomplished and committed Board, which includes a founding Board and a Head of School. We are looking for experienced, dedicated, and motivated individuals who are excited by the challenge of being part of a new school. Houston Classical is founded on the idea that scholars can learn at a high level notwithstanding their zip code or background.

The Role

Houston Classical is seeking a dynamic leader who will collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to ensure that every scholar has access to high-quality instruction, experiences growth, and is prepared for future success. In addition, the Middle School Assistant Principal plays a critical role in supporting the instructional team, driving scholar achievement, and fostering a positive, inclusive school culture.

 

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

Curriculum and Instruction

  • Collaborate with Principal to lead the development of a culturally responsive curriculum with high expectations for all scholars, ensuring equitable learning opportunities and access to rigorous content
  • Coach the instructional team to analyze and respond effectively to scholar data, ensuring continuous improvement in teaching practices and scholar outcomes
  • Guide the instructional team in implementing data-driven coaching cycles, including classroom observations, live coaching, and group coaching sessions that foster professional growth, excellence, and community-building
  • Ensure that teachers and instructional leaders use scholar data to make timely adjustments to instruction, promoting scholar mastery of key concepts
  • Monitor and drive academic priorities focused on scholar growth, including NWEA MAP, STAAR assessments, and TELPAS scores, with a goal of meeting or exceeding academic benchmarks
  • Ensure that benchmark data reflects steady progress toward meeting STAAR assessment goals, and support teachers in taking action to reach those goals

School Culture

  • Cultivate and lead a school culture that fosters a love of learning, scholar agency, and holistic scholar growth, ensuring that all scholars thrive academically and socially
  • Build a diverse and inclusive school community where all scholars feel supported, valued, and encouraged to excel
  • Lead and manage school events, including arrival, lunch, dismissal, and REACH celebrations, ensuring smooth operations and a positive scholar experience
  • Develop and maintain a school culture that encourages innovation and continuous improvement in instructional practices to close equity gaps and ensure that every scholar is prepared for college and career success
  • Work to ensure that 95% of middle school families attend Family Orientation and Parent-Teacher Conferences, strengthening home-school partnerships and family engagement

Strategic Leadership

  • Collaborate with school leadership, faculty, and staff to strengthen systems and processes that improve scholar outcomes and foster a culture of continuous improvement
  • Create and sustain a data-driven culture, regularly analyzing scholar performance data to inform decision-making and drive academic and cultural improvements
  • Establish, strengthen, and maintain academic and behavioral systems and procedures that promote effective teaching and scholar learning
  • Foster positive relationships and facilitate collaboration among network and school-based leaders, ensuring alignment across school initiatives
  • Regularly observe and provide coaching to instructional staff to promote pedagogical growth and improved scholar achievement
  • Plan, lead, and evaluate professional development initiatives that enhance instructional quality and support the development of all staff
  • Design and execute individualized coaching plans and performance evaluations for staff to ensure continuous professional growth
  • Achieve and maintain an 85% or higher retention rate of effective staff, fostering a supportive and growth-oriented work environment

Operational Management

  • Develop and implement systems and processes to achieve both short- and long-term school goals, ensuring the effective use of resources to support scholar success
  • Collaborate with Talent for the recruitment, hiring, and retention of highly-effective staff, ensuring that the school maintains a strong and capable teaching team
  • Work closely with the Operations Team to achieve and maintain a 96% or better average daily attendance rate, promoting strong scholar engagement and consistent attendance
  • Collaborate with the Enrollment Team to meet or exceed 95% scholar enrollment, ensuring the school serves a stable and growing scholar population

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships with scholars, staff, and families
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional growth, with a proactive approach to developing leadership skills
  • Demonstrated high academic results as a teacher and/or leader 
  • "Whatever it takes" mindset, with a strong focus on achieving results and overcoming challenges to ensure scholar success
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and efficient in managing tasks, resources, and time to meet school goals
  • Consistently models professionalism, integrity, and ethical behavior in all interactions
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively, ensuring timely completion of assignments and projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly convey ideas, expectations, and feedback
  • High capacity for problem-solving, with the ability to think critically and adapt to dynamic, ever-changing situations
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
