Reports To:  Fleet Manager                                                    Date:  December 8, 2004

 

 

Summary and relationship to the curriculum: All classified positions will strengthen the delivery of instruction to support the system’s mission. Fleet Mechanics repair and maintain the district’s school buses, service and fleet vehicles to ensure safe operating conditions in accordance with federal and state laws and requirements. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

 

  1. Performs fleet diagnostics and repairs.
  2. Follows work schedules as assigned, including off-hour emergency situations.
  3. Completes all work orders in a safe, timely, effective and efficient manner.
  4. Maintains accurate repair and inspection records.
  5. Maintains and ensures all tools, equipment and materials are operational and safe to fulfill duties and responsibilities.
  6. Adheres to all safety rules and regulations. Follows all equipment, material and product- use directions.
  7. Participates in training and professional development activities as required by school system, state and federal regulations.
  8. Drives a school bus as needed, following bus driver duties and responsibilities.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation, Fleet Manager or designated supervisor.

  1. Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.  A combination of experience and training in maintaining, repairing and rebuilding automotive engines, including diesels is required. Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MACS) Certification in diesel and air conditioning repair is preferred.

 

  1. Certificate or License Required: Must possess a valid Georgia Commercial Driver License Class B with P, S and air brakes endorsements. Must meet all requirements for school bus driver certification.

 

  1. Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence and the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small-group situations.

 

  1. Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

 

  1. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions, and to interpret directions.  

 

  1. Technical Ability: Ability to read wiring schematics and use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment and tools to trouble shoot and repair buses. Must possess knowledge of internal combustion engines and all other mechanical components of school buses, service and fleet vehicles.

 

  1. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work as a team member. 

                                               

Physical Demands:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and lift.  Occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel.  The employee is regularly exposed to vibration, and must be able to exert or lift up to 50 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 75 pounds.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.  Exposure to outdoor elements is frequent.  Bus travel involves exposure to traffic elements.  The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts.

Professional Requirements: Desirable personal characteristics are required. Appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards required. Must report to work on time, adhere to attendance standards and conduct activities safely.
