Position Overview:
The Education Manager is responsible for developing, managing and administering HHS’s Education Department. With the support of the Community Impact Director, the Education Manager will expand Houston Humane Society’s vision and mission by educating and engaging the public about animal welfare and how our community can help the lives of animals and our environment.
The Education Manager designs, coordinates, and oversees the implementation of all Education Department activities related to teaching and promoting humane attitudes and treatment towards animals. Topics include issues related to animal welfare, animal rights, and animal behavior. This position requires public speaking, working with, and managing groups of all ages, from pre-K and elementary school children to adults. This role will also serve as a liaison between HHS and partner agencies to ensure community awareness and the advancement of partnerships.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee all aspects of ongoing programs:
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with community organizations, schools, businesses, and government agencies.
- Develop programs for underserved communities.
- Select or develop written materials/curricula that may be used by teachers and students to reinforce humane education.
- Supervise the implementation of education programs.
- Uphold the standards outlined in the Employee Handbook.
- Plan, track, and report on individual and departmental work to support organizational coordination and synergy.
- Assessing, handling, and transporting appropriate animals.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned
Work with the Community Impact Director:
- Assess organizational needs and target population to design and improve programs.
- Develop short-term and long-term plans and budgets for educational programming projects, including ways to monitor progress, coordinate all logistical requirements and evaluate pre-determined goals performance.
Performance Measures
- Strategically plan and supervise the implementation of HHS programs and the expansion of those programs.
- Establish and maintain realistic project plans, budgets, timelines, milestones, success indicators, and tracking tools for project completion and program advancement.
Supervision Received:
Work under the general direction of the Community Impact Director and receive general supervision. Work independently to prioritize and complete assigned tasks.
Supervision Exercised:
Training and supervision of educators, summer interns, teen leaders, and junior camp counselors.
Qualifications & Skills:
1. Bachelor’s Degree.
2. 3-5 years experience in education.
3. Knowledge of animal welfare issues; highly motivated toward promoting animal welfare and protection.
4. Excellent attention to detail and follow-through as demonstrated through effective project management experience.
5. Demonstrated writing and editing skills; experienced public speaker.
6. Ability to organize, supervise and motivate a team.
7. Ability to effectively communicate the rationale for HHS policies and procedures.
8. Ability to work comfortably with all domestic, wildlife and livestock animals.
9. Able to forecast and monitor budget expenditures.
10. Able to effectively respond to project workflow issues and demonstrate accurate judgment of needs for support.
11. Criminal background check required.
12. Possess a valid Texas Driver’s license with a good driving history.
