Staff Registered Nurse (RN)

The Staff Registered Nurse (RN) position at Houston Methodist is responsible for delivering high-quality patient care. As a key member of the healthcare team, the Staff RN provides professional nursing care to patients with varied and complex needs.

Responsibilities include conducting nursing assessments, assisting with exams and treatment, clinical triage, patient education, and maintenance of medical records. The Staff RN communicates effectively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless coordination of care and achieve desired treatment outcomes.

The Staff RN demonstrates expertise in clinical competence, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies. This role acts as a patient advocate, ensuring rights are respected and maintained throughout the care process.

A leader in coordinating patient care, the Staff RN directs and delegates activities of the patient care clinical team. With progressive responsibility, this role includes precepting new employees and contributing to initiatives in partnership with management.

The Staff RN uses therapeutic communication, active listening, and teaching to establish relationships with patients, families, and interprofessional healthcare teams. This role contributes to teamwork by being aware of patient flow, offering assistance, and responding positively to requests for help.

The Staff RN implements staff education specific to patient populations and department processes, coaches and mentors other staff and students. They follow patient- and family-centered care standards, as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.

This role advocates on behalf of patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns. The Staff RN monitors and manages electronic health records, including patient medical advice requests and refill requests that impact patient care plans.

Quality/Safety Essential Functions

The Staff RN follows nursing process standards, regulatory requirements, and professional practice outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. They identify areas for practice improvement with research-based evidence to achieve quality measures and patient safety outcomes.

This role provides and modifies care to complex patients, coordinates care with the interprofessional team, and improves quality and safety scores through peer-to-peer accountability and collaboration.

The Staff RN operates required equipment accurately and safely, prepares and sterilizes instruments according to established parameters, and maintains records and monitors quality control and infection control standards.

This role prepares equipment, assists providers during treatments, and ensures exam rooms are stocked, neat, and orderly. They clean, sterilize, and test medical equipment, demonstrating self-motivation to manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks.

The Staff RN champions new care pathways or service line implementations, identifies areas for innovation, efficiency, and improvement in patient care or department operations, and offers solutions through evidence-based practice/performance improvement projects.

Requirements

To be eligible for this role, applicants must have:

• One year of nursing experience in a healthcare environment

• RN-Temp - Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days

• Demonstrated skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned job duties

• Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English language

• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, physicians, families, and co-workers

• Working knowledge of Microsoft products, including Outlook

Travel Requirements

This role may require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area. However, travel outside of Houston Metropolitan area is not typically required.
