Job Summary
At Houston Methodist, the Pianist position is responsible for creating a holistic environment of care for our patients, guests and employees by playing classical, cultural and traditional music selections appropriate for the healing environment. This position performs high quality, purposeful programming, which is presented in public areas throughout the Houston Methodist system. The Pianist position selects music aimed to relieve anxiety by creating a welcoming environment of solace, offering emotional and spiritual inspiration and supporting the journey of healing and caregiving for all. This position remains conscientious of the environment and modifies music selections in regards to audience feedback, activity in the space and environmental disruptions. The Pianist position maintains professional boundaries and connects individuals with other departments like Security, Spiritual Care, and Guest Services when the need arises.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

PEOPLE - 40%
1. Exhibits sensitivity to surroundings and approachability to listeners. (EF)
2. Responds positively to requests for assistance from customers, employees and visitors, using clear and professional communication to facilitate problem resolution.
3. Mentor or trains volunteer pianists, as needed.
SERVICE - 40%
1. Provides music as a service to promote the holistic environment of care at Houston Methodist. (EF)
2. Performs a wide variety of classical, cultural and traditional music selections from sheet music (provided by the employee) or memory. (EF)
3. Plays for hospital events, as determined by the schedule coordinated with management, multiple times a year. (EF)
4. Plays piano for 2 and 4 hour shifts with a 15 minute break every hour. (EF)
QUALITY/SAFETY - 10%
1. Contributes to a safe working environment with respect to sound levels and overhead announcements. (EF)
2. Acts accordingly, displaying sensitivity to the needs of doctors, nurses or chaplains when discussions are taking place with patients and families within close proximity. (EF)
FINANCE - 5%
1. Use resources efficiently; does not waste supplies. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritizes department daily tasks, minimizing incidental overtime.
2. Ensure consistent piano coverage.
GROWTH/INNOVATION - 5%
1. Responsible for active development of performance repertoire.
2. Support hospital and department goals and offers innovative solutions through participation in department projects. Assumes responsibility for self-growth and development by participating in in-services programs and continuing education. (EF)

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
o High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
o Professional pianist with 5 years experience
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
o Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
o Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
o Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
