Role
The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing accounting support to include general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and accounting and regulatory reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS), National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) rules and regulations, National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA) operating rules, and other applicable regulatory authorities.
Major Duties And Responsibilities

Assists in the preparation of financial statements by gathering and analyzing information from the general ledger system, core system and departments. Reviews month-over-month GL variances and gives explanation/analysis to support differences for assigned GL’s. Reconciles various general ledger and external accounts daily and prepares necessary clearing general ledger entries. Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data. Reconciles work by analyzing, researching and verifying GL information and comparing system reports to balances. Completes assigned monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts.

Oversees the monthly reconciliation process by, but not limited to, comparing the master general ledger accounts with core accounts. Supports the month-end close activities. Helps supervise the escheatment process for negotiable instruments, backup withholding, and other regulatory transmittals and reporting processes throughout the year. Assists in reviewing the Call Report and assists in the review of Fixed Asset and Prepaid records confirming depreciation/amortization timeframes and General Ledger accounts are accurately applied. Assist with internal and external audits, ensuring documentation is complete and compliant with relevant standards.

Responsible for, but not limited to, posting and reconciling investment principal, interest, amortization of premiums/discounts, and accruals, handling daily settlement entries/downloads from plastic card processors, GAP, cash advances, Alkami daily file transmittal, Narmi settlement, Zelle balancing and managing monthly budgeted accruals.

Reviews current work processes and makes recommendations to enhance workflow for greater efficiency. Provides backup in the accounting department to cover out-of-office situations. Works on special projects as assigned. Assists in implementing department-wide continuous process improvements that streamline processes and increase accuracy. Provides technical guidance and work direction to Accounting Clerks and Accounting Specialists.
Other duties, as assigned.

Experience
Minimum of three (3) years of experience in accounting or finance, preferably in a credit union, banking, or financial services environment, including time spent in preparatory positions.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
A bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or a public accountant (CPA) certification is desirable.
Interpersonal Skills
A significant level of trust, credibility and diplomacy is required. In-depth dialogue, conversations and explanations with members, peers and outside vendors can be of a sensitive and/or highly confidential nature. Communications may involve motivating, influencing, educating and/or advising others on matters of significance. Typically includes subject matter experts as well as first level to senior managers.
Other Skills
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.). Ability to prioritize multiple, and sometimes, conflicting tasks.
