What are the responsibilities and job description for the High School EMT Support Instructor - Contingent Professional Fire and Rescue Services position at Howard County Government?
Provides instruction specifically for the high school EMT course. Provides administrative support for the primary EMT instructor, such as lesson planning, activity and field trip coordination, grading of assignments and exams, and coordination of external certification testing (Maryland, National Registry). Acts as liaison to the public school system for the Department.
STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:
$35.00 - $38.00 HOURLY
Responsible for support and independent teaching of daily didactic and psychomotor lessons
Assists with the development of lesson plans.
Responsible for development, delivery and grading of assignments and quizzes
Assists with administrative tasks such as gradebook, attendance and records maintenance.
Assists the primary instructor and course administrator with liaison functions with the public school system to assure compliance with school system rules, regulations, records management and safety.
Reports to Department designees on a regular basis and in the event of any sentinel events or critical needs for the program
Attending inter-organization coordination meetings, as assigned.
Other duties may be assigned.

- At least a current Maryland EMT-B certification is required.
- Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board (MICRB) certification as an EMT Instructor is required.
- Must meet and maintain requirements set forth by the public school system to work in the schools.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Five (5) years of EMS instruction experience is preferred.
- Experience teaching at the secondary school level is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute (MFRI) procedures is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Maryland Institute or EMS Systems (MIEMSS) procedures is preferred.
- Licensure as a Maryland or National Registry Paramedic is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Requires standing, squatting, and working on the floor to perform/teach skills.
- Requires light lifting to move equipment and assist students, as needed.
- Environment requires the ability to effectively and professionally manage adolescent students.
LANGUAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS AND REASONING ABILITY:
- Must be able to learn basic computer skills working with LMS and MS Office programs.
- Maryland EMT licensure or higher.
- Maryland Instructor Certification Review Board (MICRB) – Instructor Certification.
- EMS Skills Practice Completion.
