Contingent Paraprofessional - Police, Animal Control

Provide administrative support to the Administrator, Supervisors and staff members in the division as required. Answers telephone, greets visitors and performs all related clerical and front counter assignments related to the operation of the animal shelter, animal rescue and law enforcement. Position requires extensive contact with others, including the general public, the Office of Law, the Animal Matters Hearing Board and officials from other organizations, and departments. This contact includes explaining functions and procedures, explaining animal related laws and the affidavit procedure, the licensing function, animal related inquiries, etc., with tact, diplomacy, discretion, subtlety and good judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Educates citizens regarding their legal responsibility for their pets, of proper care, training, spay/neuter, wildlife and other related topics.

Deactivates and activates voice mail; retrieves messages, answers and returns calls, receives and processes applications, assigns home visits and/or interviews, writes up vet transports, finalizes adoptions.

Intake animals, redemption of animals to their owners, sells dog and cat licenses; takes lost and found reports, checks for matches, photograph and create descriptions for the animals to be placed on website.

Gather information from various sources for superior's use; prepares reports, answers routine letters; composes letters for superior's review and signature.

Prepares warnings, citations, compliance notices and other related forms of correspondence.

Performs dispatch, filing and other duties assigned, required and/or necessary for daily operations and future expansion.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED and one (1) year of related experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of animal health, behavior and training.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office software and office equipment such as fax machines, calculators, computers, copiers, printers, etc.

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Possession of a valid driver’s license.

LANUGAGE SKILLS, MATHEMATICAL SKILLS, AND REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid driver's license.
