POSITION SUMMARY:
This is correctional work at the first line supervisory level with work performed under general supervision and is responsible for maintaining security, custody and care of incarcerated person in the Howard County Detention Center and Central Booking Facility.
STARTING SALARY IS $71,282 ANNUALLY/$34.27 HOURLY
CLASS DESCRIPTION:
Performs supervisory and advanced level corrections operations work under general supervision from an administrative or technical superior. Work includes maintaining order and discipline among inmates and first line supervision over correctional officers and staff as assistant shift leader. Assigns work, conducts inspections, evaluates performance, and hears employee grievances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Maintains security over inmates; observes inmate behavior; supervises the work assignments, recreational activities and housing activities of inmates; search inmates for contraband; inspects and searches inmate living areas; work spaces, recreational areas, program areas for cleanliness and/or contraband.
Conducts and records security rounds, formal and informal counts and inspections.
May process the intake and discharge of inmates; receives and reviews legal; court, and all official documents pertaining to an inmate; receive and issue clothing, property and funds under the supervision of a superior.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with staff and inmates.
Conducts inspections of inmate housing and work areas.
Conducts investigations.
Coordinates the scheduling of employees.
Completes performance evaluations and provides input for performance improvement where needed.
Observes job performance; provides guidance and direction to subordinates.
In the absence of the Correctional Captain, acts as a shift leader by directing the work of lower level correctional officers as assigned; completes shift records.
Monitors staff compliance with Federal and State correctional standards as well as Departmental policy.
Employee must be qualified with departmental weapons.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Directly supervises subordinate officers assigned to maintain security over inmates. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and completing reports for disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Associate's degree from an accredited school and two (2) years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
U.S. Citizenship or resident alien status.
Minimum Age of 21.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Ability to use a personal computer.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS
Successful completion of required in- service training courses.
Successful qualification with Department issued handgun and shotgun, or other long rifle.
