What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corrosion Technician II position at Howard Energy Partners?
The Corrosion Technician II is responsible for all facets of field executed corrosion prevention duties including cathodic protection, internal corrosion control, atmospheric corrosion control, protective coating and lining, materials selection, and design/project support.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Ensures the integrity of the pipeline system by using standard industry corrosion prevention techniques. Aids in operating in-line digital inspection tools for metal loss and stress corrosion cracking, develops related actions plans, conducts and documents prove-up inspections, and prepares closure reports.
- Ensures adherence to all company policies and procedures related to DOT 192 and 195 regulations for pipeline integrity and corrosion control including operator qualification requirements. Leads initiatives to design and implement effective long-term cathodic protection systems and documents all compliance-related activities.
- Collects annual pipe-to-soil survey data and rectifier readings, troubleshoots rectifier units, conducts interference testing, and recommends designs for overseeing installations. Additionally, creates as-built drawings for necessary cathodic facilities.
- Designs, installs, operates, and maintains cathodic protection facilities, power lines, galvanic anodes, and internal corrosion facilities.
- Monitors the condition of the pipeline through pipe-to-soil potentials, visual inspection, examination of coupons, and data from in-line tools.
- Monitors electrical isolation, identifies points of electrical shorts, performs stray current interference tests and corrects identified interference issues.
- Performs coating evaluations to detect atmospheric corrosion and provides technical assistance to operations.
- Monitors internal corrosion by evaluating, developing, and monitoring the internal corrosion control program for single, multiphase gas pipeline and liquid lines and oversees mitigation measures.
- Performs pipeline coating evaluations by testing and inspecting coating applications.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline related to the job.
- Familiarity with DOT 192 & 195 regulations.
- Expertise in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining several types of mechanical equipment and machinery (pipelines, terminals, etc.).
- Experience in developing and executing preventative maintenance schedules to ensure equipment reliability.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Strong troubleshooting skills.
- In-depth knowledge of safety protocols and procedures related to mechanical maintenance.
- High level of mindfulness to ensure accuracy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer skills including spreadsheet and word processing applications preferred.
- Ability to complete work assignments with moderate supervision in an acceptable time frame.
- Ability to understand and operate all corrosion related instrumentation.
- Capable of reading maps.
- Possesses basic math skills.
- Works well with others and independently under moderate supervision.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- 3 years of corrosion control related experience
- 3 years of competent knowledge of pipeline operations and characteristics of products transported by pipelines
Certifications:
- AMPP CP-1: Cathodic Protection Tester required or 5 years of pipeline cathodic protection experience
Physical Demands and Hazard for Field Employees:
This position may require occasional travel to remote sites, potential exposure to flammable material, adherence to safety protocols, compliance with operating regulations, and will require rigorous physical demands.
