Job Summary:
The Pipeline Operator I is responsible for all aspects of pipeline operation and maintenance, ensuring the company complies with all safety and environmental regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- None
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Locates pipelines and oversees excavations and line crossings.
- Installs pipeline markers and performs routine inspections on right-of-ways.
- Navigates commission start-ups and shutdowns of pipelines.
- Performs leak surveys of the pipeline system.
- Ensures compliance with operating procedures and regulations and maintains/repairs pipeline equipment as needed.
- Schedules maintenance and surveys of pipelines and relevant equipment.
- Controls and minimizes expense through preventative maintenance.
- Records and maintains operating data and completes required reports.
- Must obtain and maintain operator qualifications outlined in HEP’s OQ Program. (Veriforce)
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience working in the natural gas or liquid pipeline industry
- 1 year of experience working with inspections, installation, and repairs of pipelines
- 1 year of experience operating pipelines and/or plants is preferred but not required
Certifications:
- Must obtain and maintain operator qualifications outlined in HEP’s OQ Program (Veriforce)
Travel:
Travel required locally or long-distance up to 20% of the time for work-related meetings and functions.
Equipment:
Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, resource materials and equipment, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to the position.
Mental and Physical Demands:
Regularly required to walk, stand, crawl, climb stairs and bend; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms over shoulder height; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Frequent pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, bending, balance, depth perception, repetitive arm/hand movements, eye-hand-foot coordination, manual dexterity (eye/hand coordination) finger dexterity, vision acuity (far/near) and hearing acuity. May be required to climb ladders and/or stairs more than 50 ft. and work in confined spaces. Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.
May be required to spend 50% or greater of time in an outdoor setting. Will be required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Maintain emotional control under stress, work with interruptions and deadlines.
Able to perform shift work; routinely work evenings, holidays and weekends that occur during the shift.
Environmental Factors:
May be exposed to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.). Will work in or around industrial and construction settings, which may include working with chemicals, hazardous products, processes, and materials. Exposure to loud machinery, moving mechanical parts and adverse weather conditions. Gaseous risk exposure and occasional dangerous driving conditions. Will work with petroleum products under high pressure and in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold.
