We are currently looking for a dynamic, driven, and curious Research Technician I within the lab of Dr. Robert Lefkowitz at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The lab seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms of a family of cell-surface proteins called G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) applying biochemical, medicinal-chemistry, structural, and cellular techniques. GPCRs are the targets of roughly one-third of all prescribed human therapeutics. More information on the work of the lab can be found on their website. We are looking for someone with a strong background in natural sciences who has a passion for continuing to push the boundaries of our understanding. This position will be focused on elucidating the structural basis of G protein-coupled receptor signaling. Thus, the candidate will have a unique opportunity to learn cutting-edge structural biology methods such as X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy. The ideal candidate will not only be innately curious, but also a consummate team player and interested in being a good lab citizen. Depending on abilities, this person may have the opportunity to eventually run their own project after getting their sea legs within the lab. This is due to the strong collaborative nature of the work and the trust placed in Technicians within the Lefkowitz Lab. A flexible schedule One on one mentorship relationship What you’ll do: Work efficiently and cooperatively to assist Postdocs, Graduate Students, and other lab members with experiments Perform a variety of laboratory and investigative procedures – including routine experimental techniques such as electrophoresis, centrifugation, Western blot analysis, PCR, molecular cloning, and tissue culture Express and purify proteins by chromatography and perform crystallography screening Collect, verify, record and compile data and information Participate in laboratory meetings and read literature applicable to the research area Help with lab organization, including accurate documentation and recording/maintenance of large data files Assist with other support duties relating to lab operations as required – such as stocking supplies, cleaning glassware, making common reagents, etc. What you bring: Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Biology, Chemistry or a related field Prior experience working in a research laboratory Experience in protein biochemistry including expression, chromatographic purification, and analysis is a strong plus Understanding of basic molecular biology, biochemistry, and related fields Excellent analytical, communication, problem solving, and organizational skills Ability to work both independently and as a team member while engaged in collaborative studies Able to learn complex tasks with instruction, and to use experience to perform a variety of new techniques Actively seeks opportunities to increase skills and expertise Physical Requirements: Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range $15.53 (minimum) - $19.41 (midpoint) - $25.24 (maximum) Pay Type: Hourly HHMI’s salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data.
