Job Summary

To lead the academic support services that are provided to help students succeed and persist toward their educational goals.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Work with the director of the CSS on the Academic Coaching program
  2. Take the lead on the DHSI Coaching component--focused on Hispanic and low-income students
  3. Assist the director of the CSS in gathering data for the grant
  4. Conduct coaching sessions with students who fit the parameters of the DHSI grant at least every other week during their first semester on campus
  5. Conduct coaching sessions with students face-to-face and online
  6. Have coaching hours at least two evenings a week
  7. Be available to speak in classes about coaching and study skills
  8. Obtain and maintain certification as an academic coach
  9. Assist with student early alerts through EAS system
  10. Work with other CSS staff to coordinate and train peer mentors and assist the CSS director with the Peer Mentoring program
  11. Assist, when needed, with academic advising, particularly in summer
  12. Work SWARM events
  13. Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    1. Education and/or Experience – Bachelor's degree from an accredited University or at least three years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Master’s Degree is preferred
    1. Language Skills - Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents in English; ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from regulatory agencies or members of the community; ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to a prescribed style and format; ability to present information to University students, trustees, other employees and the public effectively
    1. Math Skills - Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages and area; ability to apply concepts of basic algebra
    1. Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form in English
    1. Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a good working knowledge of Internet software and Microsoft Suite software
    2. License - Must be at least 21 years old and maintain a current Texas driver's license to drive any vehicle, including personally owned vehicles, on behalf of the University. Occasionally will drive to trainings and professional development
