Job Summary The head coach is responsible for leading, guiding and mentoring the women's basketball program in a positive Christian manner, including compliance with NCAA and ASC regulations. The coach accepts and delegates tasks from the Director of Athletics and Assistant Director of Athletics. The coach provides leadership for a program that contributes to the holistic development of students. Applicants must support the university mission statement and be an active member of a local evangelical church. Must have and maintain a current Texas driver's license at all times. Must be able to travel away from home at least 50% of the time.

 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Athletics.

  1. Lead the Basketball program based on proven Christian integrity and ethics consistent with the University Mission Statement
  2. The coach must remain in compliance with all NCAA and ASC regulations, including but not limited to the following:
    1. Playing and practice seasons
    2. Coach involvement in recruiting efforts
    3. Pre-season and post-season workouts must be voluntary, open to all students, and may not involve any athletically related activity
  3. Coordinate compliance with all university, NCAA, and ASC policies and regulations
  4. Possess expert knowledge of skills and strategies related to basketball
  5. Lead and supervise the basketball coaching staff
  6. Carry a roster of 20 student-athletes
  7. Monitor, mentor, and coach student-athletes participating in the basketball program
  8. Coordinate and supervise the recruiting process
  9. Coordinate practice schedules
  10. Schedule games
  11. Supervise fundraising campaigns
  12. Supervise marketing campaigns
  13. Coordinate program travel
  14. Supervise facilities and maintenance of equipment (Coliseum)
  15. Address safety and security concerns. Stop any activity that is dangerous to the student-athlete or other students
  16. Administer all budgets related to the basketball program
  17. Assist with supervision of chapel
  18. Supervise academic success initiatives for student-athletes (class attendance, tutoring attendance, etc.)
  19. Seek opportunities to participate in professional organizations, activities, and development (association membership, conference attendance, publications, etc. Represent HPU at conferences, trainings, retreats, etc.
  20. Evaluate basketball program. Participate in University assessment activities, institutional effectiveness programs, and strategic planning
  21. May teach one to three credit hours per semester

Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises basketball coaching staff including full-time coaches, part-time coaches, graduate assistants, and volunteer coaches. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the University’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the Essential Duties and Responsibilities listed above satisfactorily.   1. Education and/or Experience - Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university is required. Three years related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A master’s degree and college playing experience is preferred
  2. Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, fans, or employees of the University
  3. Math Skills - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  4. Reasoning Ability - Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  5. Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have excellent working knowledge of Internet Explorer; Design: Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word; and Desktop Publishing software
  6. License - Must have and maintain a current Texas driver's license at all times in order to drive any university-owned vehicle, rented vehicle, or the employee’s personal vehicle on behalf of the University
  7. Other Qualifications - Must be able to travel at least 50% of the time
