What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Pharmacy position at HPC Specialty Pharmacy?
Primary Functions:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Pharmacy Operations, the pharmacy's operations include compounding, dispensing, scheduling, purchasing, distribution, QI, and regulatory compliance. Serves as the pharmacist-in-charge and is responsible for compliance with laws, regulations, professional conduct, and responsibilities of the pharmacy technicians.
Major Responsibilities:
- Daily opening and closing of the pharmacy practice site.
- Organizes and directs the pharmacy program’s operations and employees to ensure the 24-hour availability of services and products.
- Assures adequate inventory of pharmaceuticals and supplies.
- Assures all equipment utilized in the delivery of HPC products and services is adequately maintained.
- Assures pharmacy services are provided in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation standards, company policy and procedure, and ethical standards of practice.
- Assures adequate and appropriate staffing, including recruitment, orientation, in-service education, and completion of annual performance appraisal. Terminates pharmacy staff as required.
- Coordinates with other company areas and managers as appropriate, consistent with organizational structure.
- Assures the implementation of a pharmacy performance improvement program, including evaluating the home pharmacy program services.
- Chairs the company PI and P&T and serves as a Compliance and CMP committee member.
- Chairs the Quality Management Committee (QMC).

Assures the Drug Control system is consistent with policies and regulatory requirements, including:
- Certification of medical and prescription orders
- Provide final verification of all products before shipping
- Initial and provide comments on medical and prescription orders
- Provide patient counseling
- Provide drug information to patients, nurses, caregivers, and prescribers
- Supervise receipt of prescription drugs and orders,
- Supervise storage of medications,
- Supervise packaging of medications,
- Preparation and dispensing of prescriptions,
- Supervise labeling of the medication container
- Preparation of prescriptions for delivery
- Oversee return and/or destruction of products
- Provide instruction/counseling to clients and caregivers regarding specific drug therapy, including possible adverse reactions and/or interactions.
- Always ensure appropriate pharmacy supervision.
- Provides information regarding the safe and appropriate use of medications to other health care professionals.
- Assures safe and appropriate service policies are developed and implemented.
- Identifies appropriate outcomes of drug therapy.
- Consult on drug therapy and coordinate with other health care professionals.

Monitors and documents ongoing drug therapy, including the assessment of:
- The therapeutic appropriateness of the choice of drug(s),
- Therapeutic duplication in the client’s drug routine,
- Appropriateness of the dose, frequency, and route of administration,
- Adherence to drug regimen,
- Potential drug, food, or diagnostic test interactions of disease limitations to drug use,
- Laboratory or clinical monitoring methods to detect drug effectiveness, side effects, toxicity or adverse effects,
- Preparing and maintaining clinical records
- Assures prescribing activities are consistent with state/federal regulations
- Manages pharmacy operations in accordance with established fiscal parameters.
- Assists in obtaining/completing billing information and documentation,
- Assists in the development of HPC’s budget for pharmacy, personnel, and equipment
- Plan, develop, implement, administer, and evaluate programs related to pharmacy services.

Represents the organization to other groups, organizations, and the public:
- Assists in marketing HPC products and services,
- Conducts in-services as required.
- Ensures the accuracy of all public information materials.
- Informs the Board of Directors and staff of current organizational, community, and industry trends.
- Performs duties of staff pharmacist when required; oversees/performs compounding and distribution of all pharmaceutical products, ancillary supplies, and equipment; Assures appropriate clinical monitoring of patients; Assumes on-call responsibilities in rotation.

Fulfills reporting/documentation requirements as necessary:
- Monthly pharmacy report and statistics if required by the Board of Directors.
- Monthly environmental testing.
- Monthly, quarterly, and annual payer utilization reports.
- Pharmacy QI indicators.
- Prescriptions, pick lists, drug profiles, and other documents as required by law and company
Qualification Requirements:

Education:
- B.S. degree in pharmacy from an accredited institution
- PharmD or MS degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of infusion therapies.
- Demonstrated compliance with aseptic technique.
- Strong interpersonal skills and communication.
- Computer proficiency.
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of recent clinical pharmacy experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role (e.g., managing staff, overseeing operations).
- Experience in a pharmacy setting that includes managing medications for patients with hemophilia or other complex medical conditions.
- Inventory management experience.
Language Skills:
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret standard scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
- Ability to respond to complaints from employees, regulatory agencies, or business community members.
- Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
- Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Policy and Procedure
- Accuracy in mathematical calculations, including pharmacokinetic dosing.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
- A current valid, unrestricted clinical pharmacy license in the state(s) of practice listed.
