Summary
The Business Development Manager is accountable for identifying, developing, and generating new business for HR Green. The Business Development Manager is responsible for working with Project Managers, Client Service Managers, Regional Directors, Pursuit Specialists, and other Senior Leadership to support corporate marketing initiatives across Business Lines, create annual revenue forecasts for assigned clients and initiate individual sales activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Business Development / Sales
- Meets/exceeds sales goals assigned in annual performance expectation for their position.
- The primary focus of efforts will be on Key Pursuits identified by Business Lines in their annual business plans.
- Creates and maintains marketing plans (Client Account Plans and Pursuit Plans) and shares records of marketing activities with internal stakeholders.
- Aligns activities to the organization’s highest priority marketing efforts and our Mission, Vision, and Values.
- Provides strategic overview of existing and anticipated market conditions. Identifies project opportunities and provides input to Business Line staff regarding Go/No Go decisions. Creates specific project pursuit plans, when appropriate.
- Acts as business development lead for targeted clients. Responsible for leading overall business development planning efforts with those clients, involving other technical staff as needed.
- In coordination with Business Lines, presents projects to clients on a regular basis. Accountable for the development of proposals and interviews on key pursuits, and assisting Business Lines with other pursuits.
- Actively cross-sells with strategic, multi-service line clients to maximize HR Green’s opportunities to grow revenue with those clients.
- Participates actively on committees, boards and other professional associations in order to develop long-term relationships with new and targeted clients.
- Continually evaluates HR Green’s skill sets, expertise and tools against client needs and suggest solutions for achieving increased sales and revenue.
Communications
- In coordination with Business Lines, maintains contact with clients after projects are secured and cross-markets other services as appropriate.
- Engages other staff, as appropriate, to strengthen relationships with assigned clients.
- Acts as a liaison between HR Green staff and potential clients to facilitate the exchange of information and service offerings.
- Ensures that Project Managers and other key technical staff are advised of potential revenue opportunities, strategic positioning, and client concerns.
- Identifies and facilitates conference and speaking engagement opportunities to increase HR Green’s reputation in the marketplace.
- Consistently uses CRM tools to track and communicate marketing activities.
- Conducts internal and external business in a manner that creates a one company approach to business development and service delivery.
- Works closely with Business Line staff to ensure that projects meet and exceed internal and external client expectations for scope, schedule, and budget.
Operational Excellence
- When requested by Business Lines, provides appropriate technical experience to projects as needed. This may include attendance at stakeholder meetings, public involvement, design guidance, and quality assurance.
- Assists others with the preparation of proposals and interviews for pursuits that they are not leading.
- Assists in the development and delivery of training programs designed to reinforce HR Green’s client-needs approach to marketing, proposals, and interviews. Leads training sessions to enhance HR Green’s focus on client needs.
- Acts as a resource for all “Key Pursuits” projects identified by Business Lines.
- Coaches and mentors staff to enhance their business development, marketing, and client relationship skills.
- Other responsibilities as defined.
This position does not have direct management authority but is responsible for directing the activities of HR Green staff necessary to acquire and retain clients.
Education and Experience
- B.S. degree required; P.E. license preferred.
- Eight to 15 years of demonstrated successful experience in client development and marketing of professional services, with 3-5 years of experience leading and managing the project delivery portion of a project.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Thorough understanding of marketing/sales processes in use by HR Green.
- Practical knowledge of potential funding sources available to our clients.
- Working knowledge of technical and office support software required to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Current Professional Engineer, Architect, or related state license preferred.
- Valid driver’s license in the state of residence and a reliable means of transportation for company business.
- Formal project management training and/or certification through recognized project management institutes/curricula preferred.
- Authentic and credible within the industry.
- Familiarity with both sides of the customer-supplier model.
- Experience working in the Minnesota engineering market.
- Ability to develop proactive and pre-emptive strategies.
- Leadership responsibilities within engineering industry professional organizations.
- Comfortable with the life cycle of project delivery from pursuit identification to project implementation.
- Confident and outgoing in interacting with people in the marketplace.
- Previous experience in the consulting sector.

Compensation Range
$123,800.00 - $202,800.00
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Minnesota Omnibus Labor and Industry Policy Bill Article 7 Section 2. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, skills, prior work experience, competencies, and geographic work location. The total annual compensation package may consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate, after a qualifying period, in our performance and discretionary incentive bonus program(s).
