Summary
We are currently seeking a Staff Structural Engineer to join our Transportation Structures team in Iowa who has a passion for structural engineering. This position will work with an exceptional team of planning and design professionals focused on a range of structural projects for city, regional, and state clients. Our transportation team strives to deliver for our clients by envisioning solutions, developing designs, building consensus, and constructing the infrastructure that meets their current needs while also considering the future.
This engineer will assist with the delivery of technically robust projects crucial to our transportation network, focusing on bridges and other vital transportation structures like culverts, retaining walls, and sign structures. Responsibilities may include creating and analyzing 3D models, developing plan details, generating quantities and cost estimates. The employee will need to have the capacity to work on multiple projects in a week with the ability to manage workload to meet specified deadlines with the support of the team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and drafting of engineering plans including bridges, retaining walls, culverts, and other structural details.
- Developing structural detailed drawings from rough sketches and/or verbal instructions or notes with limited direction from other staff as skill set advances
- Performing structural computations with limited direction from engineering team. Includes performing structural analysis using structural analysis software.
- Completing and checking quantity calculations and cost estimates.
- Participates, as needed, in design meetings with engineering and client staff to fully understand expected project outcomes.
- May accompany engineers or field technicians as needed in order to better understand field conditions, evaluate existing structures, or coordinate details during construction.
- Works under the guidance of engineers to complete assigned work within budgeted timeframes.
- Reviews own work and the work of CADD Technicians for completeness and accuracy prior to submitting to Project Manager or engineering staff for review.
Education and Experience
- A candidate with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited four-year or graduate engineering university in relevant discipline
- Recently graduated students are welcome to apply!
- A candidate with proficient knowledge of office software (Word, Excel, etc.)
- General CADD experience mandatory; Microstation based OpenBridge Designer or OpenRoads Designer is preferred.
- Experience with 3D modeling of structures a plus.
