Summary
The Senior Building Inspector provides the full range of building inspection duties and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. An employee in this classification performs the most difficult and challenging inspection duties, and has demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of construction terms, and proficiency at reading and interpreting construction blueprints and specifications. Work is completed independently, receiving occasional instruction or assistance when new or unusual situations arise, applying well developed program knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative. Work is normally reviewed only on completion and for overall results. The Senior Building Inspector checks plans and specifications for existing commercial buildings and buildings under construction or alteration, performs on-site inspection to determine compliance with zoning and building ordinances, codes and regulations and adherence to original plans and specifications, issues building permits and responds to inquiries from the public to enforce safety regulations. The incumbent may also train and provide indirect supervision of junior personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Conducts field inspections of building construction, plumbing, and electrical installations in commercial buildings to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
• Checks plans for original construction or alterations or remodeling for existing structures to ensure compliance with pertinent codes and accepted engineering practices. Issues acceptance or approval of such plans and specifications.
• Reviews plans and applications for building permits.
• Issues building permits.
• Confers with architects, contractors, builders and the general public in the field, office and at the counter. Explains and interprets requirements and restrictions.
• Prepares accurate and precise reports.
• Maintains accurate records including inspection and permit files.
• Submits inspection reports as required.
• Investigates violations and complaints.
• Supervises, schedules, and coordinates work of subordinate staff.
• Directs and participates in the division's on-going training program for inspectors and meets weekly with other inspectors to review existing codes, ordinances, laws, and amendments to such in order to upgrade knowledge and maintain consistency in inspections.
• Performs the more difficult inspections and assists other staff in resolving disputes between the City and developers, builders and members of the public.
• Uses safe work practices at all times.
• Acts as Chief Building Inspector if required, and assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• 10 years of comparable Building Inspector experience required.
• Computer proficiency and demonstrated knowledge of computer software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases required.
• Knowledge of approved and modern methods, materials, tools, and safety used in building construction required.
• Knowledge of Building and related codes and ordinances enforceable by the City, specifically: International Building Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, and National Electrical Code.
• Knowledge of the principles of supervision required.
• Knowledge of the principles and procedures of record keeping, filing, business writing, and report preparation required.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule to include weekends and evenings as needed is required.

Compensation Range
$83,900.00 - $110,800.00
The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act and California’s SB 1162. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, skills, prior work experience, competencies, and geographic work location. The total annual compensation package may consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate, after a qualifying period, in our performance and discretionary incentive bonus program(s).
