JOB TITLE:                                                                          Homemaker/Companion

PROGRAM/DEPT:                                                 Energy and Neighborhood Services

REPORTS TO:                                                                     Elderly Services Program Manager

GRADE/CLASSIFICATION:                    Per Diem

FLSA:                                                                                                 Non-exempt

Description: This position provides non-medical, in-home support and home management services that ensure the comfort, safety, and general supervision of clients. He or she provides companionship to those individuals requiring socialization and minimum guidance for a safe, protected, clean, and orderly environment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Homemaker (others may be assigned based upon program needs):

• Change client’s linens
• Wash client’s dishes
• Perform light housecleaning (client living area)
• Do client’s laundry
• Plan and prepare meals
• Communicate health problems or other changes to the supervisor or care manager
• Shop or run errands
• Iron or mend client’s clothing
• Conduct correspondence 
• Perform money management functions (check writing and balancing, bank deposit, paying bills, budgeting) by bonded personnel only – does not include financial planning

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Companion (others may be assigned based upon program needs):

• Escort client to recreational activity or medical, dental or business appointment
• Supervise self-performance of activities of daily living (walking, dressing, grooming, etc.)
• Remind client to take self-administered medications
• Monitor to ensure client’s safety
• Assist with telephone calls and written communication
• Report changes in client’s needs or condition to supervisor or care manager
• Read to a client
• Prepare a light meal or a snack

Minimum Requirements: 

• High School Diploma (GED) or higher preferred. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

• Experience in working with those aged 55 and over

Physical Requirements: 

• Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in home setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight
• Ability to lift up to thirty (30) pounds

Language Requirements: 

• Ability to read, write and speak English
