Overview
HSM has an opportunity for a Process Engineer Intern. The Process Engineer Intern will support Engineering activities such as time studies and continuous improvement initiatives on the manufacturing floor, confirming and updating drawing BOMs and associated data entry in JD Edwards among other projects. This internship will provide the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and training in many aspects of manufacturing engineering and day-to-day operations, while also gaining a good understanding of the HSM organization.
Additionally, interns will participate in:
- Weekly Lunch & Learn sessions with ELT members.
- A structured internship project, culminating in a final presentation to leadership.

Responsibilities
The Process Engineering Internship at HSM offers a hands-on learning experience in manufacturing operations, process improvement, and quality control. Interns will gain exposure to key engineering functions while contributing to projects that drive efficiency, quality, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a strong understanding of the company's brand, customer needs, product goals, and industry trends.
- Rotate through various operations, including manufacturing, engineering, and quality control, to analyze and improve processes.
- Conduct time studies to establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and labor cost standards.
- Identify critical quality checkpoints for manufacturing processes based on failure modes and defects.
- Analyze production layouts, tools, and workflows to recommend quality improvements.
- Create and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for new and existing processes.
- Participate in Lean initiatives, including Gemba Walks, Kaizen events, and 5S activities.
- Review technical drawings and validate Bill of Material (BOM) data for accurate system entry.
- Apply academic knowledge to real-world process improvement projects while learning new skills.
- Develop strong communication skills to effectively present technical information in a clear, user-friendly manner.
- Shadow team members and provide support to HSM employees to gain a comprehensive understanding of engineering functions.
- Interns will communicate with stakeholders professionally, supporting process improvement initiatives while learning effective collaboration techniques.
Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree program (Mechanical, Industrial, or Quality Engineering preferred) or anticipating graduation.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented individual.
- Excellent computer skills (especially Excel).
- Comprehension of tabs, rows, and columns.
- Correct data format input.
- Use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division amongst cells.
- Use advanced functions line SUM, AVERAGE, COUNTIF, VLOOKUP, AND IF.
- Applying conditional formatting and cell styles.
- Proficiently adept at data analysis and applying tools (i.e. pivot tables & charts).
- Basic knowledge of Lean and 5S methodologies.
- Basic understanding of work measurement techniques.
- Ability to research and investigate basic Engineering Topics.
- The ability to work well under pressure and with deadlines.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills
