Overview
The Supervisor, Animal Care and Enrichment is essential in supporting the physical, emotional, and social needs of the animals and is results driven, an effective communicator, and highly empathetic to people and animals. This is individual is part of a team that leads the everyday work of our Animal Care and Enrichment Technicians and drives successful programs to create the best possible experiences for the animals. The Supervisor, Animal Care and Enrichment is upbeat and enthusiastic, enjoys a challenge, and is as comfortable with overseeing day to-day operations as in supervising people and the work that needs to be done.
Our supervisor team is comprised of two individuals, each with a unique focus:
- Incoming (ensuring the shelter is prepared for incoming animals by making sure housing is prepared, learning their needs, and lining up the right support).
- Outgoing (maintaining herd health, reducing stress, helping our Animal Care and Enrichment volunteers, adoptions suites, and public facing areas of our facility).
Together, the supervisor team collaborates on developing staff and volunteers to deliver on ambitious programs and goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Foster a team environment and provide day-to-day direction for staff and volunteers to accomplish HSSV mission, values, working agreements, and goals and ensure animals at HSSV receive a high level of animal care and enrichment.
- Play an active role in performance management, including goal development and communications.
- Assist with the hiring process, including screening, interviewing, and hiring recommendations.
- Develop a culture of learning and feedback by implementing onboarding training and ongoing skillbuilding for staff and volunteers to ensure appropriate training targets are met, and safe working conditions maintained.
- Implement sustainable strategies that focus on employee wellness and prevent compassion fatigue.
- Drive process improvements which may include managing protocols for animal care and adhering to the “ideal” standards of the ASV Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
- Ensure animal spaces are clean, safe, and welcoming to positively contribute to our community reputation.
- Ensure staff know and understand cleaning protocols and recordkeeping is maintained according to department standards.
- Act as an escalated point of contact and provide mentorship to staff and volunteers.
- Manage staff schedule to ensure coverage aligned with operational needs.
- Perform staff responsibilities to help with the daily flow or to cover staff shortages, as needed.
- Assist the manager with conducting department.
- Other job duties may be assigned as needed.
Requirements
- Proven experience mentoring and training staff in a highly collaborative environment with cross functional teams preferred.
- Positive, empathetic attitude with a passion for working with animals using best practices to minimize fear, anxiety, and stress in animals; ability to interact with a variety of animals in a safe and humane manner.
- Broad understanding of animal related operations; understanding of kennel duties a plus.
- Willingness to complete Fear Free Shelter certification within two weeks of employment.
- Detail-oriented with an ability to follow directions as well as work independently with minimal supervision; proven ability to successfully lead and delegate tasks to others in an empathetic, inclusive working environment that inspires the team.
- Demonstrated ability to actively listen, understand, and make effective decisions and drive successful conflict resolution.
- Forward-thinking mindset with a proactive approach to accomplishing goals.
- Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills (with diverse internal and external audiences), including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with MS Office and comfortable using and learning shelter databases.
- Ability to lift and carry weights of up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist level. Ability to kneel on the floor, bend at the waist, reach forward and rotate the upper body. Sit/stand for sustained periods of time. Walk on wet or dry surfaces. Work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions during both daylight and after dark.
Work Days and Hours
This a full-time opportunity, weekly schedule will include at least one weekend day.
