POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Chief Public Defender this Advocate supports the operation of the Public Defenders’ Office by representing community members and non-community member Native Americans in the Hualapai Tribal Courts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conduct client intake
- Read and analyze cases
- Conduct Arraignments, Pre-Trials, Change of Pleas, Bench Trials and Jury Trials,
- Write plea agreements,
- Perform legal research,
- Draft Memorandums of Law
- Write Appellate briefs,
- Present oral arguments to the Hualapai Court of Appeals
- Maintains an effective working relationship with clients, community members, Tribal Court, Prosecutor’s Office, Tribal Law Enforcement and Tribal Council,
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Experience working in a legal office and have strong writing skills
- Be able to pass a background check and be eligible for Tribe’s auto insurance.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor within one (1) year of the date of this application.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
- Must have a current driver’s license.

Bench Trial and Jury Trial experience
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of Tribal, State, and Federal laws
- Hualapai Tribal Law and Order Code
- Hualapai Constitution
- Hualapai Court of Appeals Rules of Appellate Procedure.
