DEPARTMENT: Forestry & Wildland Fire Management Program
CLASS: Part-Time (10 Vacancy)
SALARY: $30,460.24 - $39,598.32

POSITION SUMMARY:
As a crew member you will work within the Forest Development, Timber, Hazardous Fuels Reduction, and Wildland Fire Management programs. The purpose of working within several program’s is to promote the forestry and wildland fire discipline and encourage a job that best fits your talent. The position will meet the objectives of the Forest Management, Hazardous Fuels Reduction, and Wildland Fire Management Plans for the Hualapai Indian reservation.
This position includes training, travel within or off the reservation, and an opportunity for advancement. The position is located in Peach Springs, AZ.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
As a crew member you will conduct safe practices, understand standard operational procedures, and work within the organizations chain of command. In addition, it is your responsibility to know your rights (Tribal Policy). Below are program functions you will have an opportunity to learn, while your primary duty meeting objectives for the Hazardous Fuels Reduction program.
Hazardous Fuels Reduction
- National Wildland Coordinating Group Qualifications “Red Card”, support wildland fire suppression (preferred)
- Create Fuel Breaks
- Prescribed Burn: piles or broadcast
- Fuels Monitoring
Forest Management Inventory & Planning
- Continued Forest Inventory
- Forest History Input and data mining
Forest Development
- Silviculture Treatment Activities: Site Preparation, Reforestation, Commercial Forest Stand Improvement
- Greenhouse Operation
- Forest Health Protection
- Familiarity with GIS
Timber
- Introduction to Silvicultural Prescriptions
- Timber cruise and mark
- Maintenance secondary roads and disc if required
- Monitor wood products via. Trespass
- Support portable mill operations
Woodland Management
- Woodland Treatments
- Enhance Pinion Nut Orchard
Wildland Fire Management
- Complete physical exam and work capacity test (if required)
- Obtain National Wildland Coordinating Group Qualifications “Red Card”
- Support emergency operations – Wildland fire suppression primary
PHYSICAL DEMAND
- Crew member must be physically and mentally capable of willing to endure extended periods of work under a variety of environmental conditions.
- Approximately 90 percent of this work is performed in the field.
- Incumbent must be in good physical condition and be able to ascend and descend steep topography and traverse hillsides in rough forest terrain carrying a chainsaw, fuel, supply pack, and paint canisters.
- Heavy work such as lifting and digging can occur in emergencies.
- Wildfire control assignments may involve extremely hazardous activity for extended periods of time.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must have a valid Driver’s license and be eligible for the tribe’s insurance (preferred)
- Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job;
- Demonstrates general knowledge/understanding and ability to read and interpret maps, imagery, graphics, maps coordinates and geo-referencing;
- Demonstrates general knowledge/understanding and ability to operate a compass, GPS, and tablets/Ipads to collect field inventory
- Current or will complete 1st Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogens
- Complete a physical exam
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED;
- Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills;
- Must be a team player to integrate with other programs within the department;
- Must be willing to attend and receive training related to the position;
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Must pass a background check as a condition for continued employment;
- Must submit to and pass a pre-employment and random drug/alcohol screening.
