Police Sergeant
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Police Captain, the Police Sergeant is responsible for assisting with the overall planning, developing, managing, and directing of the Hualapai Tribe's Police Department. The Police Sergeant must accomplish his/her responsibilities through proper supervisory practices and principles, community-oriented policing, and must develop strong police-community partnerships.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Police Sergeant:
Plans, Organizes, and Supervises the work of assigned staff.
Provides training and work evaluations for assigned personnel.
Must have knowledge and experience in supervisory skills and techniques in order to supervise and direct an effective, diverse, and productive workforce. May present publicly at schools, fairs, official meetings, and service clubs.
Must gain and maintain the respect of the members of the Police Department, Tribal Administration, and the residents of the Hualapai Reservation.
Is required to work as a team member with elected officials, tribal administration directors and staff.
Must build and maintain effective and cooperative relationships with other tribal, local, county, state, and federal law enforcement entities, the community and the media. Must demonstrate leadership and technical skills with comprehensive knowledge of modern law enforcement principles and practices.
Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and maintain an effective working relationship with subordinates and others.
Required to assist with the overall operations to include, but not limited to, management, planning, directing, daily operations, personnel matters, property and fiscal management. Must be willing and able to work other than normal working hours, in adverse weather conditions, including nights, weekends and holidays.
Must have thorough knowledge and a complete understanding of applicable federal, state, tribal and jurisdictional laws as they pertain to the Hualapai Reservation.
Must know the proper law enforcement and criminal investigative procedural practices, including search & seizure, questioning and arrests.
Ability to plan, organize, and re prioritize work to meet changing deadlines.
Must be proficient in the use and justification of firearms and other less lethal weapons. In the absence of the Chief and the Captain, Sergeant must serve as acting representative of the agency.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE. AND/OR SKILLS REQUIRED:
A minimum of 3 years current experience as a Police Officer with the Hualapai Police Department Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and possess a valid driver license.
Pass an MVR screening.
Must pass a medical examination, polygraph examination, and a comprehensive background investigation.
Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal skills.
Must be organized and punctual with the ability to follow written guidelines and procedures.
Must be able to write clear and complete reports on a daily basis.
Pass a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigations in conjunction with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Law Enforcement Services
