Under the direct supervision of the Deck Supervisor, the Swim Instructor will teach swimming in alignment with Hubbard Family Swim School (HFSS) standards of safety and excellence and the Teacher Standards. This role requires collaboration with other swim instructors and immediate responsibility for the safety and participation of children in swim lessons. The Swim Instructor is committed to fulfilling all HFSS duties with ethical conduct, community stewardship, individual initiative, and responsive service. They will demonstrate leadership, management, and technical skills through effective collaboration, using team resources, progressive decision-making, and personal responsibility. The instructor will also communicate effectively with other swim instructors, administrative staff, parents, and children.

- Perform duties in a manner that exemplifies HFSS’s Core Values – Everyone is Family, Do Small Things with Great Love, Whatever It Takes, and Embrace Learning.
- Understand and enforce HFSS policies, Swim Instructor Standards, safety guidelines, rules, regulations, and emergency procedures. Maintain responsibility for swimmers’ safety and whereabouts at all times.
- Greet swimmers, parents, and staff warmly; build positive relationships and create loyalty among customers.
- Understand the different HFSS swim levels and prepare lessons according to the HFSS curriculum to ensure swimmers’ success.
- Teach and demonstrate swimming strokes and skills to participants of different ages as per HFSS curriculum.
- Communicate regularly with the Deck Supervisor about class structure, lesson plans, student progress, and personal development needs.
- Regularly assess students’ abilities and provide recommendations regarding advancement and placement to the Deck Supervisor. Prepare for Lane of the Week assessments. Stay aware of each child’s skills and needs.
- Ensure swimmers achieve skill goals in a timely manner.
- Learn and refer to swimmers by name to create a personal connection.
- Serve as a model for swimmers and other staff members. Exhibit positive behavior, conversation, personal habits, and attitude.
- Quickly and effectively resolve behavior issues and disputes involving swimmers.
- Maintain swim supplies and equipment, ensure it is in good shape, organize and store teaching equipment, and report damaged items to the Deck Supervisor. Keep the facility clean, organized, and safe.
- Continuously strive for improvement and expertise in job responsibilities.
- Attend staff meetings and training as scheduled.
- Arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes before the scheduled instruction period begins.
- Perform additional job-related duties, including but not limited to instructing swim lessons.
- Be flexible with scheduling and assist coworkers, including substituting when necessary.
- Internal: Works directly with the Deck Supervisor and Site Supervisor for direction and oversight.
- External: Interacts with students and parents.
- Two years of high school education.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Emotional maturity and genuine enjoyment of water.
- Ability to instruct in the pool for up to 5 hours per day.
- A genuine interest in the character development of youth.
- At least one year of experience working with youth or in related fields such as swimming, youth programs, recreation, or education (preferred).
