SUMMARY:
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic School Counselor to join the Quinn Middle School community. Candidates should be able to contribute to a positive environment for student learning and involvement, embracing cultural diversity and multiple perspectives. Hold a strong belief that all students are capable of achieving and is able to provide support and feedback for a wide range of learners. This position provides guidance and support to one grade level of students and moves with those students as they transition through adolescence in grades 5-7. The School Counselor works with students on academic, social, and emotional development as well as with personal growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Assists students and parents/guardians with early high school planning including evaluation of abilities, interests, aptitudes and achievements.
- Reviews students’ schedules, grades, and extracurricular activities to assist with educational goals.
- Supports special education students through attendance at IEP meetings, preparation of Transition Plans, and collaboration with special education staff.
- Supports 504 students through attendance at 504 meetings, coordination with teachers, academic counseling, and collaboration with 504 Coordinator.
- Assists new/transfer students in getting acclimated to the school.
- Coordinates and supports evening events as needed
- Serves as member of the Instructional Support Team (IST) and the Crisis Response Team.
- Provides direct instruction as a co-facilitator during weekly social emotional learning block with students.
- Counsels students to clarify needs and provide immediate, short-term interventions. The school counselor acts in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws and policies with respect to confidentiality, suspected cases of abuse, and threats of harm or violence.
- Works collaboratively with school psychologists, adjustment counselors, parents, teachers, and community-based mental health professionals to develop a broad base of support for students.
- Refers students and families to community agencies to assist them in managing crises outside the scope of the school counseling program.
- Collaborates with ongoing interventions to reduce the need for crisis management and remediation.
- Supports direction, vision, and accountability of the school counseling program. Ongoing consultation and collaboration with school administration and staff to foster understanding and support for school counseling initiatives and planning.
- Participates in school committees in support of improved policy, procedure, or support for students, staff, or families.

Qualifications:
- Fluent in Portuguese. Hudson is a linguistically diverse community as is Quinn Middle School. Speaking more than one language helps staff to connect with students who also speak multiple languages.
- Master's Degree in counseling, education or related field preferred
- MA DESE School Counselor or Guidance Counselor License at the appropriate level.
- Successful completion of Criminal Records Check (CORI), and fingerprints
- Current authorization to work in the United States. Candidates must have authorization by their first day of employment.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Hudson School Committee’s policy on evaluation or in accordance with union contract.
WORK YEAR:
- 10 months. 183 work days, 3 personal days, 12 sick days, 6.5 hours/day, 32.5 hours/week.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand strength to grasp tools. Frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
