Job Description – Educare Classroom Staff

Purpose:

Supervise; coordinate the planning and execution of developmentally appropriate care and activities which meets the needs of the individual children between the ages of 6 weeks through 12 years.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum standard is an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or Child Development.
  • If this degree is not met, then a CDA must be obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • Employee must be willing and able to maintain 20 hours of professional development annually through professional conferences, trainings and staff meetings.

Physical Demands:

  • Good Health
  • Pass a physical, background check, TB test & drug screen
  • Ability to be up and walking on feet for the majority of work hours, in order to move around the classroom to be able to observe in the classroom area and outside as well.
  • Must be able to life 50 pounds when appropriate for children who need assistance with toileting issues, a child is in distress, or in an emergency.
  • Be able to communicate orally and have good literacy skills
  • Be able to produce lesson plans, developmental reports, attendance records, and notes to the families that are handwritten or computer generated.

Competencies:

  • Prepare original weekly lesson plans and execute daily planning of developmental learning activities (drawn from the Creative Curriculum and the Indiana Foundations (Standards) in areas that will contribute to the social, emotional, physical, language, and intellectual growth of individual children and groups of children.
  • Coordinate activities in the classroom with other staff and students from MACC, Ball State and Ivy Tech.
  • Create a warm, attractive, orderly, and inviting physical and learning environment in the classroom, which is appropriate and appealing to the specific age range of children, and the learning center activities are rotated at least every two weeks.
  • Encourage and demonstrate pro-social behavior in children that is age appropriate. Work on implementing positive classroom management skills geared for individual children, and to be pro-active to challenges in the classroom and not reactive.
  • Recognize the needs of individual children, considering their cultural and social economic heritage and foster an inclusive environment. In which all children feel accepted and are treated with dignity.
  • Cooperate with specialists to provide needed services for some children and be conscious of children who may need to be referred for special services like First Steps or Muncie Community School special education.
  • Actively engage with children throughout their day and be a facilitator for their learning by providing engaging and exciting activities that are motivated by the children’s interests.
  • Maintain, and update written documentation of plans, activities, portfolios, and developmental progress of children in your care and meet two times a year with families for a parent teacher conference.
  • Provide adequate outside gross motor time (enhance with classroom items as well) as stated in classroom schedule. At least two times a day, weather permitting. Less than 25 degree wind chill or Dangerous Heat Index typically with humidity levels reaching dangerous levels would warrant children to remain indoors.
  • Maintain all legal paperwork, attendance and food program documentation as directed.
  • Become fluent in all State Licensing Regulations as well as adhere to all standards set forth by NAEYC.
  • Maintain a healthy and safe environment, reporting all needs appropriate to administration or support personnel.
  • Maintain all health and safety standards as set forth by Indiana Bureau of Child Care and NAEYC.
  • Care for all aspects of children’s physical needs.
  • Maintain all sanitary standards as they relate to food service, classrooms, bathrooms, & universal precautions.
  • Maintain all items in classroom in a sanitary manner, and sanitize classroom daily, according to daily and weekly cleaning charts posted in the classroom. Document all cleanings.
  • Develop relationships with parents, and interact with all families upon arrival and departure (and more during the day if necessary by phone or conference) relating pertinent information about their child and activities in the center, in a positive and supportive manner.
  • Promote and demonstrate warm, cooperative working relationships among entire staff, students and volunteers. Participate in staff meeting, in-service trainings and development and assessment of the entire program.
  • Maintain Professionalism.
  • Any and all other duties as deemed necessary and appropriate by administration.
