What are the responsibilities and job description for the Release of Information Specialist position at Huggins Hospital?
Under the immediate supervision of the Director of Patient Access, is responsible for releasing information from the paper and electronic medical record in response to properly authorized requests following HIPAA, state and hospital policy and procedures.
Position Function and Duties:
Patient Direct Requests:
Will meet and greet patients that present to the Health Information Department for copies of health information
Will verify the patient's identity
Will assist the patient in completing the request for Health Information
Will process the request immediately or within 72 hours of receipt
Scan Records:
Scans records into CPSI or Greenway for active patients (patients seen within the past 7 years)
Responds to Requests:
Responds to requests for copies of medical records (mail, fax, phone, walk in's, emails); ensures the request meets the regulatory guidelines. Ensures that all releases include only the information that is required meeting the minimum and necessary rule
Scans and notes requests in the CPSI and/or Greenway
Verifies the information released is complete
All requests will be completed within 10 business days of date receive

Attends and participates in a minimum of 50% department staff meetings and signs off on review of 100% department staff meeting minutes
Completes all required annual education on or before the due date

Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; and pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers
Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress

Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication
Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and convey information in a clear, concise and accurate manner
Familiarity with computer and other business machines
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Certification in Release of Information preferred. At least one year of healthcare experience preferred.
