Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Demonstrates a high level of mental and emotional tolerance and even temperament when dealing with ill people; uses tact, sensitivity, sound judgement, and a professional attitude when relating with patients, families, and co-workers at all times. Actively functions as a patient advocate. Must have thorough knowledge of the principles and skills needed for practical nursing to provide patient care and treatment. Knowledge of examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures. Knowledge of medications and their side effects on patients. Knowledge of patient education principles to develop a self-care program. Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment. Skill in administering a variety of treatments and medications as directed. Skill in using various types of equipment for examination and treatment procedures. Skill in taking vital signs. Skill in maintaining records and writing reports. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to communicate clearly, in writing and verbally. Must develop knowledge of current hospital emergency policies and procedures, fire, safety, disaster, and infection control policies.
