What are the responsibilities and job description for the Highway Worker I position at Human Resource Department Portage County, Ohio?
JOB OBJECTIVES: Incumbent is responsible for assisting with the maintenance, construction and repair of County roads, bridges, and culverts using various pieces of light vehicles such as cars and pickups. Under general direction of General Superintendent and general supervision of Road Crew Foreman and/or Crew Leader.

Skills And Knowledge
Equipment: Ability to use the following equipment: Pickup trucks. tractor broom, tractor mower, tractor post hole digger, , material loader, sewer jet, two-way radio etc.
Critical Skills/Expertise
Engineer will provide the CDL training in house to help the Highway Worker I obtain a Class A CDL, subject to all provisions of the collectively bargained in house training program. Individual will be given one-year probationary period to obtain a class A CDL license. Upon licensure the candidate will become a Highway Worker II.
RESPONSIBILITY
Work consists of routine tasks, following established procedures. Supervisor provides general supervision in following established practices and clear-cut policies. Errors in work may cause delays in work or losses in expenditures for materials and/or equipment or unjustified work time.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements: Incumbent performs heavy work which may require lifting more than fifty (50) pounds frequently.
Physical Activity: Incumbent performs the following physical activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work in which operating light duty pickup trucks and other light duty equipment is required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbent works outside, and is exposed to temperatures that range from below 32 degrees to above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour. Incumbent is frequently exposed to noise, vibrations, atmospheric conditions and various other hazards.
Essential Job Functions
- Operating pickup trucks and various pieces of motorized equipment.
- Performing manual labor tasks, such as patching roads, filling potholes, sealing pavement, cutting brush and trees, mixing and pouring concrete, cleaning culverts, etc.;
- Loading and unloading trucks;
- Flagging traffic at job sites;
- Performing general maintenance and repair of work areas, facilities, equipment, and vehicles.

- Knowledge of County highway and bridge construction and road repair methods;
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, departmental policies and procedures, safety procedures, etc.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement.
- Knowledge of County highway system.
- Ability to work at other than regular hours and upon short notice.
