The Assistant Finance Director serves as a key member of the finance leadership team, providing strategic financial oversight and operational support while serving as backup to the Finance Director. This role ensures continuity of financial operations, maintains robust internal controls, and supports the organization's growth through sound financial management and reporting.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management & Reporting
- Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP
- Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including AP/AR, general ledger maintenance, and bank reconciliations
- Develop and maintain financial models for forecasting and budgeting
- Manage the annual budgeting process in collaboration with department heads
- Monitor and analyze budget variances, providing actionable insights and recommendations
- Ensure accuracy of cost center allocations and grant accounting
Audit & Compliance
- Support external audit processes, including preparation of schedules and documentation
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations
- Monitor and implement changes to accounting standards and tax regulations
- Oversee fixed asset management and inventory control systems
- Ensure adherence to internal control policies and procedures
Strategic Planning & Leadership
- Act as Finance Director during absences, ensuring seamless continuity of operations
- Collaborate with senior leadership on financial strategy and organizational planning
- Develop and implement financial policies and procedures
- Provide financial analysis for strategic initiatives and special projects
- Build and maintain relationships with banking partners, auditors, and key stakeholders
Team Management & Development
- Foster a positive, inclusive workplace culture that promotes collaboration
- Provide mentorship and guidance to finance team members
- Support professional development initiatives within the department
- Facilitate cross-departmental communication on financial matters
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education & Experience
- Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum of 3 years progressive experience in financial management
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit accounting and grant management
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems
Knowledge & Skills
- Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Strong understanding of federal and state tax regulations
- Excellent project management and problem-solving abilities
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
Technical Proficiencies
- Advanced Excel skills
- Experience with accounting software
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods
- Capable of lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally
- Visual acuity sufficient to review detailed financial documents
- Ability to communicate effectively in person and via telephone
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Professional office environment
- May require occasional evening or weekend work during peak periods
- Occasional travel up to 1 hour away may be required
