Job Description
The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead is responsible for overseeing the mechanical architecture and design of our Wearable Edge Computing & Instrumentation systems, and for providing clear directions to a diverse team of engineers developing high-reliability wearable products. This role involves leading electromechanical innovation while collaborating with cross-functional teams, managing technical documentation, and supporting products throughout their lifecycle. Strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of product requirements, and the ability to balance technical constraints and business goals are key attributes for success in this role. The ideal candidate is a great engineering leader, thinker, and team builder thriving on pushing the boundaries of product design while driving results. This position has the potential to greatly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of our product development process, and our speed to market as we look to disrupt the world of wearable technology by developing and selling fabric-embedded electronic products and solutions that transform the intersection of technology and the human.
Responsibilities:
•Lead research and product development activities for mechanical and electromechanical aspects of HSI’s Wearable Electronics systems and sub-systems roadmap
•Support product development and research development proposals to our Department of Defense (DoD), other government agencies, and commercial customers
•Provide guidance and mentorship for other members of team
•Responsible for team members’ performance and reviews
•Work from design concepts and requirements to engineer innovative products which meet functionality, cost and schedule goals
•Electro-mechanical design, layout and modeling of electro-mechanical assemblies and electronics packaging (using SolidWorks)
•Develop and assemble non-functional and functional prototypes of small-scale mechanical and electro-mechanical assemblies
•Continuously improve the design process by ensuring best practices and tools are applied and evaluated
•Implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) practices
•Create detailed designs and drawings for fabrication
•Interface with manufacturing (in-house and out-of-house) through New Product Introduction and ramp up to production of HSI products
•Lead design reviews
•Create and manage the ME department operating budget
Functional Skills/Knowledge
•Highly creative problem solver and idea generator
•Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
•Familiarity and experience with contract research and development environment – preferably within the DoD
•Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills (verbal and written)
•Strong time management skills
•Strong proficiency in 3D modeling (SolidWorks)
•Candidate must be comfortable in conceptual, as well as hands-on, design, assembly and integration, including development and assembly of small-scale mechanical and electro-mechanical prototypes and small deliverable runs
•Experience with creation of engineering drawings, GD&T preferred
•Familiarity with both Defense and Medical Device industries preferred but not required.
•Experience with fabric assemblies and/or soft goods design is a plus
•Experience with project management is a plus
Requirements:
•BS/ MS in Mechanical Engineering with 8 years of Mechanical Engineering experience, preferably in an emerging technology company
•Has a strong understanding of cross-disciplined engineering principles (i.e., HW, ME, manufacturing, etc.)
•At least 2 years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role
•Strong solution ideation and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
•Experience managing the deliverables for engineering and manufacturing test platforms
•Excellent communication and leadership skills
•US citizenship or legal permanent resident is required
