JOB SUMMARY

The Humane Rescue Alliance, the first unified organization in a major urban area to provide animal welfare programs and services to the community, seeks a veterinary technician manager to lead a dynamic team of medical professionals to provide medical care and monitoring of health and welfare of animals through its medical center. HRA’s medical center cares for shelter animals and provides low-cost services to members of the public via appointment and through HRA community programs, including community cats and animals in HRA foster homes. This position offers a unique opportunity to work for an innovative, mission-oriented organization committed to changing the landscape of animal welfare.

The Veterinary Technician Manager will train and supervise veterinary support staff while acting as a leader in the medical department. The Vet Tech Manager will provide oversight of daily tasks of technical staff while upholding and modeling high standards of care for animals in HRA’s care. They will provide a wide range of medical care and guidance, from

basic wellness and surgical support to HRA shelter animals and community / owned animals. They will ensure each patient is treated humanely and compassionately and that it complies with policies and mission of organization. They must be committed to providing incremental levels of care to owned animals to support accessible and improved health and quality of life in the home, with a focus on the preservation of the human-animal bond and surrender prevention.

There are two Veterinary Technician Managers that will share overseeing duties of the medical center. This Vet Tech Manager position will be more focused on working with support staff on the clinic floor and overseeing training.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform all duties of a veterinary technician with highest standards of care and attention to detail.
  • Oversee training and onboarding with direction from the Learning and Development team and the Director of Shelter Medicine.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Shelter Medicine on creating and maintaining written SOPs and training protocols for all medical staff and volunteers.
  • Assign daily tasks and responsibilities to technical staff and ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Oversee care and treatment of hospitalized patients and monitoring and preventative care for shelter population.
  • Meet weekly with the Director of Shelter Medicine.
  • Assign tasks to volunteers and oversee their daily work.
  • With supervision of Director of Shelter Medicine, review and maintain controlled substance recording.
  • Ensure equipment is in good working order, perform quality control measures, and promptly report issues to the Director of Shelter Medicine.
  • In collaboration with Medical Center leadership and the Director of Shelter Medicine update and review departmental protocols and SOPs as needed.
  • Oversee general cleanliness of medical center.
  • Participate in generating solutions for problems or challenges in the department.
  • Occasionally perform managerial duties for other parts of the medical team in the event of PTO, illness, etc.
  • Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Center leadership and the Director of Shelter Medicine on hiring, managing, and developing the medical team.
  • Work closely with the Medical Center leadership and the Director of Shelter Medicine on reviewing resumes, conducting interviews in person and on the phone.
  • Work closely with the Medical Center leadership and the Director of Shelter Medicine on performing annual performance evaluations.
  • With supervision of the Director of Shelter Medicine, issue disciplinary action and maintain accurate employee records with use of ADP.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • College degree or Certified Veterinarian Technician strongly preferred.
  • Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience as a veterinary technician.
  • Experience with shelter medicine preferred.
  • Experience as supervisor preferred.
  • Certified in Fear Free Shelter handling techniques, or interest and ability to become certified within 60 days of employment.
  • QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Licensed veterinary technicians preferred but veterinary technicians with several years of experience in the field especially those with previous training experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of veterinary technician and animal shelter procedures and protocols including pharmacology, anesthesia and analgesia, restraint and handling techniques, phlebotomy, laboratory skills, triage of emergencies, general nursing care, neonatal care, infectious diseases
  • Ability to uphold excellent standards of care.
  • Ability to lead effectively and remain professional in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures.
  • Ability to be flexible, detail oriented and able to prioritize.
  • Ability to train, mentor and guide each staff member to the fullest potential.
  • Demonstrated interest in furthering knowledge level and skills of oneself and the team.
  • Ability to give constructive feedback.
  • Ability to exhibit sound judgment and handle confidential matters.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with customer service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and professionally with a variety of individuals representing the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees.
  • Computer literacy with proficient use of programs including Microsoft Office programs, Outlook email, Internet, and database management software to efficiently accomplish work.
  • Ability to routinely work evenings, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Passion for the HRA mission, and for caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species, and supporting and educating members of the public, free of judgment or bias.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50 pounds assisted.
  • Ability to be comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, and wildlife.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including but not limited to lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, and bending. Regularly moves about the facilities to coordinate work.
  • Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; common allergens; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.
